DOE Alienates Top-Notch School

DOE Alienates Top-Notch School

I recently attended a very exciting question-and-answer session at New York City’s Churchill School alongside an attorney from another firm. Churchill School is a very reputable school for children with language-based learning disabilities in New York. For many, many years, it was state-approved and funded — which meant that if the City was inclined, it could directly pay for a student’s tuition there.

Due to a host of issues, including the drift of the school's student population (the City sending kids who don't really match their target population) and, most likely, late payments, the Churchill School has decided not to continue to be state-approved. For all intents and purposes, starting in 2024-2025, they will be private pay only. This is certain to impact a number of families who were only able to attend with the direct authorization and funding of the Department of Education.

At the round table, our attorneys talked to the parents of Churchill who are interested in learning what the tuition reimbursement process looks like — and what one should look for in an attorney.?

Some of our clients were in attendance, and it’s always great to talk to them — one of them was the very first client I ever worked with when I began practicing. I am happy to say I am now working with the younger sibling of the original student. It was just a real pleasure to get to reconnect with that client and to give the other members of the audience of first-time claimants a glimpse into what they can expect.
