Dodging the Leadership Potholes: Is Your Style Driving Team Success or Sabotage?

Dodging the Leadership Potholes: Is Your Style Driving Team Success or Sabotage?

Imagine steering through a leadership style so riddled with avoidance, it feels like dodging potholes on a bumpy road. Picture this scenario: a leader who communicates mostly through Post-it notes, hardly engaging directly with the team. This vivid image was painted during a discussion with a client of mine who humorously dubbed their boss’s method as "Post-it Note Leadership."

While this might bring a chuckle, it spotlights a serious issue in leadership styles that avoid direct confrontation with challenges—much like the all-too-familiar, ever-worsening potholes on UK roads.

Unpacking Pothole Leadership

The term "Pothole Leadership" emerged while thinking about leaders who recognise issues (just as one might spot a pothole) but bizarrely choose to navigate around them, hoping they don’t cause too much damage. This style of leadership is like seeing the feedback from team members as inconvenient truths rather than actionable insights. Reflecting on my time consulting with a logistics firm, I witnessed the impact of such leadership first-hand.

The leaders there initially missed the mark by proposing solutions without diagnosing the problem. However, through effective listening and addressing feedback directly, we managed simple fixes that significantly boosted team morale and performance.

Exploring the Impact of Poor Leadership Communication

There’s more to this style than just avoidance; it’s also about the consequences of poor communication. I delve deeper into this topic in my video, "The Cost of Poor Leadership Communications," where I discuss how failing to communicate effectively can magnify team issues, similar to how neglected potholes become larger and more hazardous over time. You can watch the discussion here and see how essential good communication is to leadership.

Why It's Crucial to Fill Those Leadership Potholes

Ignoring leadership 'potholes'—those gaps where issues are recognised but not addressed—can lead to significant challenges down the road. These unaddressed issues can deflate a team's morale and productivity, much like a pothole can flatten a tyre.

If you're in a leadership role, take a moment to assess whether you might be overlooking some 'potholes' in your path. Could addressing these sooner rather than later smooth the journey for everyone involved?
