Doddie Weir OBE
Much has been written about the sad death of Doddie Weir OBE this weekend.?He was admired and loved by both those who knew him and had the privilege of being able to call him a friend, and those who saw what incredible things he did in pursuit of a cure for MND.
The last time I had a chance to have a good long chat with Doddie was three years ago, when he came to record a podcast with us.?Though showing the signs of how MND was affecting him, Doddie’s character, razor-sharp wit and kindness shone through as always and as he left the office to return to his home in the Borders, we all felt better for seeing him and being in his company for an hour or so.
Such was the impact of the man.?Spending time with Doddie was always a joy – whether on a rugby tour to New Zealand, which was my own first experience of meeting the gangly 19-year-old or nursing a pint of Guinness in a bar and laughing as the 6-foot 7 giant held court and had everyone around him in stitches.
During the conversation, I was once again struck by Doddie’s strength of character and his love of life.?He knew that the cards he had been dealt were not kind, but never did he show any sign of complaint or resentment – quite the opposite.?He would make the most of the rest of his life and let his optimism be a beacon for others to follow.?You can listen to the recording here:

He has done so much to bring awareness to MND through his foundation www.myname5doddie.co.uk and that will be his true and lasting legacy.?
Listening again to the podcast this morning, I hope I will be able to live the rest of my own life with the same outlook and values as Doddie.?RIP Big Man.

2 年Great person and role model. I had the honour of handing over the Premiership trophy to Doddie at the Stoop in 1998. I can remember his quiet smile to this day.
Great post David and a wonderful podcast by the big fella.
