Document Controller's Growth and Problems

I have worked in many multinationals and countries as Document Control Lead to implement DMS System and providing competent Document Controllers with Skill Competency and Training and worked for 35 years.

I have never compromised in adhering to the compliance and insist on quality services to my employer.During my journey, I have noticed that 98% of the Document Controllers are never trained by company prior to joining as Document Controller or Records Administrator Jobs.

Most of the Document Controllers are coming from secretarial,administrative back ground or through some contacts and they are being treated inhumanly and made them YES Men with fear of redundancy any time as they do not have strong knowledge of Document Control Activities.

Though many of the Document Controllers are Engineers, Graduates from prestigious universities they do not posses and Certification of Document Control or Records Administrator from any Institute.There are hardly few institutes are teaching the Document and Records Management Courses but the courses are very costly and not affordable to DC's at all.

Document Controllers are working since Morning till late Night ( they may get OT in some companies) but they are never given increments but they never think of possessing any certification on Document Control.Organizations are also not bothered as they do not prioritize Document Control as most important activities of their Project Management.

Hence Document Control Growth has become stagnant and hardly few are working on higher position with dignity due to project based and hire & fire attitude.Document Controllers never learnt from the previous lesson what they are lacking is competency,knowledge and dignity and with stand in any circumstances.

At Present Many DC's are redundant due to Gulf Crises and They have been compelled to work by reducing their package to almost 50%.

I still insist that Document Controllers must undergo Certified Courses from DC Institutes and learn Web based Document Management System (EDMS) Courses which are now available with E-Learning,Class Room, Home Study and also on Skype,Hangout and other media on individual basis whenever they are free during vacation,weekends,redundant.
