Docktail Parties: Bridging the Gap at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club , a BoardRoom magazine Distinguished Clubs , recently set sail on a fresh approach to member engagement with its innovative "Docktail Parties." These lively events have been a game-changer for membership development, creating a fun and inclusive atmosphere that connects members from different segments of the club. The idea originated from a simple desire to foster a sense of community and has since blossomed into a beloved tradition that other yacht clubs might want to consider.

The concept was straightforward yet brilliant: host casual social gatherings in the club's picturesque 252-slip harbor. By choosing different areas of the harbor for each event, members enjoyed unique atmospheres and stunning views each time, making the experience fresh and exciting. Alexa Coole,?Membership Director, explained, "I created the Docktails event to satisfy and connect the entire membership, including both active and social members.?We wanted to make everyone feel welcome and part of the community."

The execution of these events was seamless. Docktail Parties took place once a month, with a simple yet effective formula: great company, delicious cocktails, and live music. The live music component added a lively energy, encouraging members to linger and enjoy the evening. "The music really set the tone," Coole noted. "It created a warm, inviting ambiance that made members want to stay and mingle longer."

These gatherings have been particularly impactful for social members who might not typically engage in boating activities.?"We found that social members felt more integrated into the club's culture through these events and gained additional knowledge about boating. Following the execution of this event, five social members converted to active membership,"?Coole said. "They had the chance to explore the harbor, meet other members, and even learn about boating from those more experienced. It broadened their engagement beyond traditional activities and helped them feel more connected."

Members' reactions to the Docktail Parties have been overwhelmingly positive. The events have become a highlight of the club's social calendar, offering a relaxed and enjoyable way for members to interact. They provide an opportunity for newer members to meet the more seasoned ones, fostering connections that might not happen in other settings. "The feedback has been fantastic," Coole shared. "Members appreciate the casual, no-pressure environment, and it's been a great way to bridge the gap between different interests within the club."

For other yacht clubs looking to replicate this success, the key is simplicity and inclusivity. The concept doesn't require extravagant planning—just a welcoming space, some good tunes, and a willingness to bring people together. As Coole aptly put it, "It's all about creating opportunities for members to connect and feel like they're part of something special. That's the real magic of the Docktail Parties.”
