Doc Engineering: How To Get?Started

One question I often get when introducing myself at networking events is “What exactly is a Documentation Engineer”? So I decided to write this blog post explaining what I do and how others in my field contribute to the success of a product or system. As a documentation engineer, my main responsibility is to create and maintain technical documentation that helps users understand how to use a product or system. This includes writing and editing user manuals, API documentation, technical specifications, and other materials that explain the features and functionality of the product or system. I also work closely with software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the documentation accurately reflects the product or system and that it is delivered in a timely manner.?

There are several ways people can break into technical writing:

  1. Acquiring relevant skills and knowledge: Technical writing requires a solid foundation in writing, communication, and technical skills, such as experience with software, programming languages, and other technical tools.
  2. Building a portfolio: Aspiring technical writers can develop a portfolio of writing samples to showcase their skills and expertise. They can create technical documentation for open-source software, contribute to technical blogs, or volunteer to write for non-profit organizations.
  3. Networking: Joining professional organizations, attending technical writing events and conferences, and connecting with other technical writers can help aspiring writers learn about job opportunities and gain industry insights.
  4. Taking courses or pursuing a degree: Many universities and community colleges offer courses and degree programs in technical writing, which can help aspiring writers build their skills and knowledge.
  5. Applying for internships or entry-level positions: Many companies hire entry-level technical writers or offer internships to recent graduates to gain experience in the field. These opportunities can help aspiring technical writers build their resumes and gain valuable experience in the industry.

To sum it up, documentation engineers play a critical role in industries where technical documentation is necessary for product or system usage. If not for their efforts, users may find it challenging to utilize the product or system, causing frustration and reduced productivity. By working with stakeholders and leveraging their technical knowledge, documentation engineers guarantee that users have the required information to operate the product or system with confidence. Consequently, their work is an essential aspect of the success of any product or system, and their contributions should be duly recognized and valued.

In #5, I’d also add “contract position” to that list. Contracting is a great way to get to know a team and company where the bar to entry is much lower than fte. For those just getting started, I recommend working as a contractor for a few teams/companies to get a good sense of how they can make impact with content through the different environments….
