Do Your Thing
Dan Nielsen, LFACHE

These days we receive a lot of mixed messages from popular culture. On the one hand we are urged to tread carefully, watch what we say and do, and strive to always be appropriate and politically correct so we don’t offend anyone or step on toes. On the other hand, we are encouraged to be bold, confident, and one-of-a-kind, to take risks, to stand up and speak out for what we’re passionate about, and to challenge societal norms.
While I’m all for civility, diplomacy, and striving not to offend, I also embrace the rhetoric that shouts: BE YOU! Do your thing! Don’t listen to the naysayers!
Author Asher Ross wrote the following:
“Do your thing. Do it every day. Do it unapologetically. Don’t be discouraged by criticism. You probably already know what they’re going to say. Pay no mind to the fear of failure. It’s far more valuable than success. Take ownership, take chances and have fun. And no matter what, don’t ever stop doing your thing.”
By all means, be kind and be considerate of others and their unique stories and perspectives. But do your thing. Don’t apologize for being you! Don’t let criticism discourage you, and don’t fear failure.
Be your best self. Pursue your purest, highest, and most important passions. Serve others with excellence and you will achieve your greatest impact and success. Take chances, have fun, and do your thing!
