Do Your Job!

Do Your Job!

A couple times a year, I like to test my luck at the Blackjack tables. My goal has always been to see how long I can stretch $20. Not exactly a high-roller right.

Playing cards is a fun activity that, if done in moderation, is no different than playing hide and seek. It’s a way to spend your free time with the thrill of being able to win something.

If you’ve never played, Blackjack starts with players making bets. The Dealer then deals two cards to the players and two to him/herself. Players must decide whether to stand, hit, surrender, double down, or split. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by either 1) having a total that exceeds the dealer’s total; or 2) by not going over 21 when the dealer does.

Unbeknownst to the novice player, there is a playing etiquette – like hitting when you should stick or sticking when you should hit – so you won’t attract the ire of your fellow players.

Being part of a team, like playing Blackjack, requires everyone to "Do your job!" This means being prepared, working hard, paying attention to details and putting the team first.

This weekend we’re going to enjoy Super Bowl LIII. The coach's "Do your job!" philosophy just may be the difference maker. Elegant in its simplicity, "Do your job!" translates well for us as business leaders and entrepreneurs. When reinforced, the message strengthens trust and leads to greater accomplishment within our organization.

Here are 5 ways to incorporate "Do your job!" sensibilities into your daily routine:

  1. Communicate the game plan
  2. Set expectations for each player
  3. Practice the fundamentals
  4. Provide immediate feedback
  5. Encourage trust and inspire confidence

It’s up to us to impart a "Do your job!" mentality within our organization and teams that we lead.  If we do it well, we will WIN!
