I had given two suggestions to PM on the website Interact with PM as follows:
1. Apart from the PM relief fund, create a fund specifically to deal with Corona virus and request every Indian to donate at least one rupee. I had also mentioned that in case any such fund was created the I along with Krishna Virendra Trust that I chair, will be first to donate money.
2. Though there was no significant movement from other parts of the country but migration of daily wager from Delhi was getting out of hand. In light of this, I suggested that some provision be made to transport them.
Later, I posted them on the LinkedIn on 24th and 27th. They have the details of my suggestions. I had no reasons to believe that they will even be considered. Yesterday I heard that the government has ordered that transport will be provided.
UP government may not have any option but to provide transport as the situation was already out of control in Delhi or they may considered the feasibility of the suggestion.
Yesterday night, I got a call from my friend Raj Manglik from USA that the government has created a fund for small person to contribute. It was too late in the night to check.
Today morning, when I checked then found that a trust by the name of PM CARES has been created. Donation to it are exempted under section 80G of the Income Tax Act. Method of donating is also very simple. Money can be transferred online or by mobile. It explains that fund will enable micro-donations as a result of which a large number of people will be able to participate with the smallest of denominations. Here is the detailed information about the same.
As I had promised in my suggestion, I have donated Rs. one lakh in the fund. Krishna Virendra Trust has also donated one lakh. My wife will donate the same amount on 1st April 2020. She says she has already crossed her quota of donations in this financial year. Domestic help working with me have also contributed Rs. 100 each.
When I had mooted this idea, some had said why are you doing it, whatever you or others will do will be negligible in comparison to what government has committed. Good question.
I think, after my final journey, when I will stand before them for my final judgement and when they will ask, "What have you done". I will be able to answer that I have at least done whatever I could during lock down for those who were waking on foot without food, without water, for those who had no masks, no ventilators.
