Do you, or your organization, really understand what innovation is? And, even more important, how to manage it?
About 20 years ago Peter Drucker said that how to manage innovation was an unanswered question. Today, despite some advances mainly concentrated in academic realm, it is still not fully understood. Too many companies still have a limited focus on innovation management, which is typically ideas generation, quick development, and time to market. Trusting in solid PCP processes, most companies believe that it is enough to grant business differentiation.
The reality, however, is rather different, as the PCP generates a sequence of chain setbacks, challenging the learning and innovation linearity.
In a more modern approach, one interesting study identified five key elements of innovation management (The Innovation Pentathlon Framework).
–????Ideas Generation
–????Selection
–????Implementation
–????Innovation Strategy
–????People, culture, and Organization
So, if you think you know what innovation is, or your organization believe that innovation is a sole responsibility of R&D… Think again and read a bit more!
A good reference is the book of Keith Goffin and Rick Mitchell – Innovation Management, Effective Strategy & Implementation.
