Do you work with a narcissist? Here’s how to recognize one—and how to manage your interactions

We all have people at the office whom we enjoy working with—and then there are some who are a little more difficult. Some of the worst offenders are those who exhibit signs of narcissism , writes Forbes senior contributor Jack Kelly in his recent article.

A reg flag that your co-worker or boss may be a narcissist is when you notice a pattern of conceited and self-centered behavior. This kind of workplace conduct, especially if it’s coming from your manager, can be tiring. A narcissistic leader lacks empathy, does not offer psychological safety, and has a disinterest in the mental and emotional well-being of their own staff.

Be on the lookout for someone who has a constant need for praise—their ego requires it. Narcissists also tend to overexaggerate their contributions (sometimes going as far to take credit for work you have done), lack humility and stretch the truth. And if something goes wrong, it’s rarely their fault.

Have you heard of the term “main character syndrome”? Popularized on TikTok, it describes a sort of narcissistic personality for people who view themselves as the protagonist in their own life story, with everyone else blending into the background. In a work environment, this type of personality can hurt an entire team.

If you recognize these traits in your manager or a co-worker with whom you work closely, it’s time to start the work needed to get out of the situation. Unfortunately, this can sometimes mean searching for a new job. But if there’s a challenging job market or you feel financially insecure, there are steps you can take to stay afloat in the meantime:

  1. Play up to the narcissist: This is a short-term maneuver, but necessary to keep the person happy
  2. Document everything: Write down everything that they have said or done that was inappropriate or in violation of corporate policies and procedures
  3. Rally allies on your team to join you: The more examples you have or the narcissistic behavior, the better
  4. Share your documentation: If the narcissist continues with their abusive tendencies, bring your examples to the company’s human resources department
  5. Find new work: If going to HR does not bring about the intended results or consequences for the person, it’s unfortunately time to put all of your efforts into finding a new job as quickly as possible. A toxic work environment will harm your mental health and could lead to negative long-term effects on your career trajectory.

Tech tips: These ChatGPT prompts will help you build an engaging PowerPoint presentation

If your job requires you to present in front of others, you are likely all-too-familiar with producing a slide deck. It’s often a struggle not to fall into the same-old techniques for slides—but doing so can lead to your audience losing interest, and fast.

If you’re looking to create an engaging presentation, Forbes contributor Rachel Wells has some prompts you can type into ChatGPT to level up your next PowerPoint .

  • I am [job title] presenting to [job titles of audience] for the purpose of [objective of presentation]. Give me an outline for this PowerPoint presentation, [title], which will last 15 minutes. Keep it to no more than 12 slides
  • Provide some ideas for starting my presentation with a bang, including attention-grabbing opening slides. (Once it provides the answer, write the following prompt): Repeat the above with this presentation [title] in mind
  • How can I handle or field questions about my presentation, from the audience of stakeholders, effectively and confidently?
  • Suggest some ways I can introduce and present the concept of [name of concept] to a non-technical audience
  • Provide a list of topic-relevant icebreakers that I can use to kick off my presentation on [topic], which will be suitable for the 30 team members in attendance

Remember: ChatGPT answers will always require an edit. What the chatbot provides you with will be a jumping off point for your presentation—a way to spark ideas and get the creative juices flowing.

I've been in this situation before, and it's truly baffling how some managers as well as HR fail to see or choose to ignore the signs of narcissism in the workplace. I'm grateful to see Forbes addressing this issue head-on. It's essential for both individuals and organizations to understand the profound impact narcissistic behavior can have on teams and productivity. Too often, these behaviors are excused as just 'the way they are,' but it's crucial to raise awareness and foster healthier workplace dynamics. I'm committed to continuing to raise awareness on this important issue.

I have never had to block someone on LinkedIn until my experience with Narcissists. You may want to take the " high road" but that doesn't work with Narcissists, actually. Once they can't control you, they control how others see you. You do need to stay aware of your actions and words, because others may not know the story. You may hope that others will find out the truth on their own, but usually folks are so enamored with Narcissists they miss all the signs until much later. Most importantly, leadership is usually charmed by them the most. The best thing you can do is pre-work to build your brand, work hard to control the narrative, first, before they do. Build relationships and recognize what the motivations are for your leadership then work to secure the narrative you are the solution to that need. Don't trust they will figure out you're great on your own, or that they will realize the Narcissist until it is absolutely too late (because over time they destroy culture and take too big of risks, but it can take years). Or, decide to leave before you suffer the consequences of their actions against you.
