Do You Wish Christmas Away?

Do You Wish Christmas Away?

I know for many Christmas can seem overwhelming; the pressure of ‘the season to be jolly’, can be all too much.

Although Christmas is known to be particularly stressful, suicide rates are in fact down during this time. This is what the Centre for suicide Prevention has to say ..

‘Suicide rates may be down during this period, but crisis workers all agree that Christmas can be a very stressful time. ?Loneliness, depression, feelings of loss, financial burdens, family conflicts, and alcohol abuse can intensify during the holidays.’

If you’ve been feeling like you have ?to ‘just get through it’ and can’t wait for the year to be over, consider you may be missing something. ?Every moment can be a new beginning, literally; you don’t have to wait till the New Year to start to make new choices.

Think about what you want to get out of next year. ?If you want, love, good health, inspiration then look at how you are going to make that happen. ?Stop waiting for someone else to do it for you.

If you bear a grudge against someone, why not open up to forgiving and moving on. ?Forgiving someone is a gift to ourselves. ?Whatever someone has done, or not done, consider that you can put the past in the past. You see the thing is that if you don’t, you will simply bring the past ?with you, into your future: just like in the story about ?Scrooge, it comes back to haunt you!

What can you do today that will have today count? Right now stop wishing your life away waiting for the future, or for someone else to make your dreams come true, and start being proactive. ?You can choose to have the best year of your life, (even if you’re reading this is December!)

I have learnt to love Christmas in whichever set-up it comes. I do have a preferred, big happy family version of it, I have lived it and loved it, and I have a very small version of it, too. Once we needed to postpone it for some reasons. I have had it in the tropics, in rain and also in Winter Wonderland. This year it will be the smallest it has ever been: one son and me and the dog. And we will make it lovely. I will be able to do the same if I will ever be just me myself and I. No, I do not wish it away, for me this is the only time when I feel the whole world is slowing down and it is easier for me to relax into resting as well. PS.: thank you for this reflection - I think my Xmas post has just been conceived ;-)

Christmas is a challenge for my family (Jim died right after Christmas 2017, and his sister and dad had died either side of Christmas 3 years earlier, so it’s kind of triggering) but I don’t wish it away. I’ll have sweet times with my kids and friends ??
