The update to ASTM D4169-23e1 impacts performance test reports

ASTM D4169-23e1 "Performance Testing of Shipping Containers and Systems"

  • According to the updated Mf factor, the “Schedule C-Vehicle Stacking” test sequence could no longer be passed at the previously defined safety level, e.g. AL I.
  • Keywords: Increase of shipping (freight) density factor from 10 lb ?ft3 [160 kg/m3] to 12 lb ?ft3 [192.2 kg/m3].

Mitigate the risk!

  • If you are assuming that a change from AL I to AL II represents an increase of risk in transport, the opposite can certainly be proved.
  • Adjusting the Assurance Level requires an increased understanding of the physical relationships, probablity of occurance, material science and a calculation which is finally documented in a robust rationale.
  • How to proceed?
