As most of you know, I decided to learn Japanese in my twenties. Talk about a challenge! Everything was different—the writing, the grammar, and how people express respect through language. I remember staring at those beautiful but mysterious Japanese characters, excited and overwhelmed.
Here's the funny thing: today, as I work with AI, I'm getting that same familiar feeling. And it hit me—learning to work with AI is a lot like learning Japanese. Let me tell you why.
?
The Similarities Struck Me
?
Remember learning your first foreign language? It's a bit scary at first, right? Well:
In Japanese, I had to learn that the verb goes at the end of the sentence (imagine saying "I to the store went" instead of "I went to the store")
With AI, I'm learning to be super clear and specific, like giving directions to someone who takes everything literally.
?
My Biggest "Aha!" Moment
?
Just like in Japanese, where saying something too casually to an elder could be embarrassing (yes, I learned this the hard way!), using AI has its own set of "rules":
With Japanese: I had to learn when to be formal vs. casual
With AI: I have to learn how to phrase things just right to get the results I want
?
What Makes This Journey Easier
Here's what I learned works for both languages and AI:
?
Start small - Just like learning "hello" in Japanese (こんにちは), start with simple AI prompts
Practice a lot - I made countless mistakes in Japanese, and I'm making them with AI too. That's okay!
Learn with others - Having study buddies helped with Japanese, and sharing AI tips with colleagues helps now.
?
Why This Matters for You
If you're feeling unsure about AI, remember this:

?
You've already learned new things in your life
You've already adapted to new technologies before
You already know how to learn - you just need to apply those same skills
?
The Big Difference (And Why It's Good News)
One thing that makes learning AI easier than learning Japanese is that you don't need to be perfect! When I spoke broken Japanese, it was sometimes embarrassing. But with AI:
?
There's no judgment
You can experiment freely
Every "mistake" teaches you something useful
?
My Simple Advice
?
Just start - try simple things first.
Don't worry about being perfect.
Share what you learn with others.
Keep building on what works.
Be patient with yourself.
?
Remember, I went from struggling with Japanese characters to speaking fluently. Now, I'm on the same journey as AI. If I can do it, so can you.
Want to know the best part? You don't have to memorize thousands of characters like I did with Japanese! You just need curiosity and willingness to try new things.
So, what do you say? Ready to take the first step? Trust me - the most challenging part is starting, just like learning any language. But once you do, you'll discover a new world of possibilities.
After all, both Japanese and AI taught me the same valuable lesson: what seems impossible today becomes natural tomorrow. All you need is the courage to begin.
