Meet the US vice-president Kamala Harris

The first female US vice-president was born within a family of social activists and is proud of her origins and her fight for civil rights.

A woman of color, born from a Jamaican father and Indian mother, she’s possibly one of the most powerful persons in the world, right now.

Kamala Harris occupies nothing less than the seat of the US vice-president, since January 20th, 2021, when Joe Biden was sworn in a president. The world has since celebrated the democratic victory and the triumph of representativeness as well.

Kamala’s arrival at one of the most important posts in international politics was incensed in various corners of the planet, for symbolizing the pinnacle of someone who carries the DNA of various minorities in her own genes. In her first speech, Kamala referenced all the women who paved the way for her brilliant journey: the black suffragist women who fought for voting rights during the ‘20s and female migrants, in other words, the population which she identifies with, that from now on, shall have a standard-bearer to take care of their needs.

But that’s not Kamala’s first victory, nor the only one. She graduated in Political Sciences and Economy from Howard University, and attended the UC Hastings College of the Law. Kamala Harris was District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 – 2011 and Attorney General of California from 2011 – 2017. At that time, she was responsible for the creation of unities against hate crimes, having since demonstrated her concern about intolerant violent speeches.

Kamala Harris also developed the prestigious program “Back on Track”, which supported inmates without prior records, doing time for drug-related non-violent crimes, so they would be able to graduate from high-school, which improved their chances of re-socialization at the end of their sentences, and also contributed to decrease criminal recidivism.

As for the “Open Justice” initiative, Harris created a public database portal fed by the DOJ – including data regarding police action. During her years as attorney general, Harris was nicknamed “The Female Obama”, as a direct reference to former US president Barack Obama, whose style and life history (immigrant parents) was similar to hers. By the way, the Obamas openly endorsed Kamala Harris’ bid.

In 2016, Harris resigned from California’s District Attorney’s office to become Senator for the State of California. As a senator, she defended actions of environmental protection, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, tougher gun control laws, and progressive tax reform. Her most expressive role was taking on California’s big bank corporations reaching the $25 billion National Mortgage Settlement.

Kamala Harris came from a family of scholars. Her father Donald, arrived in America in 1964 holding his Ph.D. in economics. Her mother Shyamala, was an endocrinologist. The migrant couple met at protests for civil rights and divorced when Kamala was 5. She inherited their romantic idealism, the concerns about social inequality, and the impetuosity for leadership. She was raised by her mother within an Afro-American community in West Berkeley, which primed her sense of identity and communion with immigrants. She lived in Montreal, Canada, from 12 to 18, returning to America later on. From her mother Shyamala she received the following teaching: “You can be the first to do many things, but make sure it you won’t be last”, which points out her attitude both pioneering and inspiring. Surely Harris’s political career will open many doors for other black women to be highlighted in this scenario. Her mother also used to teach her “not to sit and contemplate things, rather, doing something to change them”, and that’s the foundation of her quest. Kamala, which means “lotus flower” in Sanskrit, has a younger sister, Maya, and is married to attorney Douglas Emhoff since 2014.

When Kamala was appointed to run with Joe Biden, she was serving as Senator for the State of California. She considered running for president and disputed the Democratic Party presidential primaries, but she didn’t succeed.

After Joe Biden was confirmed as the Democratic nominee, he promised to have a female vice-president, following the nationwide protests motivated by George Floyd’s death in police custody, in Minneapolis, in 2020. Under pressure to pick a black woman, Biden’s choice was probably influenced by American activist Angela Davis, one of the main names of contemporary female activism, who publicly endorsed Kamala Harris. According to critics, the current vice-president failed by not showing vigorous support to movements such as the Black Lives Matter in 2014. Far-left segments also criticized her tough instance on minor criminals, which affected outcast populations. Despite the criticism over her most conservative instance, one of Kamala’s major accomplishments is actually her dialogue with minorities.

Kamala’s ascension is also meaningful due to the fact that she’s the first woman of color to occupy such a high office. Having said that, migrants are the protagonists of her campaign promises: she wants to revoke Donald Trump’s 2017 Muslim Ban, which barred Muslim immigrants and refugees from entering America, as well as their inclusion in government healthcare programs. Besides, she intends to give nationwide teachers a pay raise and a 6-month paid family leave to new parents and caregivers. She also dreams to unite the American people as a whole

“Kamala Harris – an American life”, is a biography of America’s vice-president authored by Dan Morain, and arrives in Brazil in February. It details the winning steps of this woman who has already entered history. An athlete, reader, and cooker as well, Kamala Harris promises to be a brilliant figure at the helm of one the biggest world economies, during the moment in which the planet needs a steady and tender hand in order to start spinning again.
