Usually, more than the 75% of the production cost of an electrical arc furnace is due to the input scrap; therefore, the most important saving can be achieved increasing the quality of the scrap. Higher the quality of the scrap higher the saving.

The SGM scrap cleaning line has been developed for improving the quality of the scrap cleaning the ferrous scrap from an inert material and non‐ferrous metals.

The steel making process of an electrical melt shop is basically a recycling process because the raw material is the scrap. The scrap is contaminated by other undesirable materials. The steel plant not only has to pay for the contaminants but also has to pay for all the smelting cost without obtaining any steel product for them. In fact, the scrap contains: Soil, rocks, concrete, etc. end up mixed with the slag but do not produce steel.

In addition to having paid for this material at the price of scrap, its presence will also result in the following:

  • A high quantity of energy required to melt it
  • Production costs and time which do not lead to an end product
  • Additional Limestone to maintain the slag basicity
  • Non‐Ferrous Metals may affect the steel quality (for example aluminum, copper, brass, zinc and lead)
  • Material such as plastic, wood and rubber will have the same problems of those mentioned previously and, in addition, will generate fumes, gases and smells.
