Do You Want to be David or Goliath?

We see two what I will call “great powers” in the world right now. By “great” I mean enormous and by “powers” I mean energies.

If we compared them on paper, we might say there is one great power and one incredibly lesser power, i.e., Goliath and David.

Yet “David” has a heart filled with what aligns with our essential nature, which is freedom and our innate desire to be free. There is incredible power in that. “David” also seeks peace. More power.

The other power exhibits actions aligned with a belief in separation: power over, control, competition, domination, taking. Fear and lack tend to inform this power.?

Could what is happening in the world actually be a mirror? Is it reflecting a war within? Am I being a David in my own life – and organization – or a Goliath??

I always look at what is occurring “out there” in my life, my work, my relationships and the world at large as a reflection of what is occurring within me, i.e., my beliefs and conditioning and emotions, especially if I’m moved by what is happening.?

If what is occurring doesn’t align with what I know my essential nature to be (OneBeing, love, peace, happiness and fulfillment) then I examine what needs realigning within me and with my life and adjust accordingly.?

I bring that same approach as appropriate with individual clients as well as with professionals and the happenings in organizations which they lead.??

I look in the mirror. At this moment, I see the opportunity in technicolor to observe the two extremes and a third approach that has arisen that wants to settle – as I see it.?

That third possibility being introduced: that of giving in and letting the forces of Goliath get what they want so as to cut the losses and stop the bloodshed. But what is a life well-lived? Is it giving up on dreams and freedom??

I see this technicolor mirror as an invitation. It is loud and clear.

The possibilities I see playing out in technicolor include:

·??????A life of slavery to another’s domination, whether that be another person or entity or any aspect of the prevailing cultural conditioning that I allow to keep me disempowered.

·??????A life of freedom where I do everything in my power to honor myself, my life.

·??????A life of giving up and knowing I gave up on what my heart says, what I know is true for me, but at least I’m alive and safe – for now.?

The dilemma is a challenging one. There are no right answers, no right decisions, no “this is better than that.” Each of us must choose.

And, when something is in front of us, we have an opportunity to see the reflection and see how that reflection informs us.

To apply these “theories” to a practical situation, I am reminded of a piece about Ross Perot that I read recently in?The Dallas Morning News.?

It was about the computer services company he founded, Electronic Data Systems, and the loyalties of the people who worked there. He started the organization with $1000 and according to Forbes the family fortune is estimated to be more than $7 billion.?

I’m not going to talk about loyalty, but about how his company came to be. A David story if you ask me. Quoting from the article:

Before EDS, Perot’s career at IBM selling million-dollar computers had stalled. The company wasn’t interested in his idea of creating software formatted for each individual client and teaching them to use it; IBM wanted to stick with hardware. Perot said if he stayed, he’d get stuck in middle management or be forced to take early retirement. But what to do?

Legend has it that he was in a Dallas barber shop waiting for a haircut. He was reading Reader’s Digest and came across a quote from Henry David Thoreau: “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”

“That’s me!” Perot thought. “I’ve got to try my idea, or I’ll never be able to live with myself.”

In church on Sunday a company name popped in his head, and he wrote it down on a pledge envelope: “Electronic Data Systems.”

He didn’t give in.

He didn’t use control.

He knew he had something more to do with his life. He opened to it. The name came to him. He went from there.

He allowed the David within to come forth. Then the Universe aligned.

That the moment one definitely commits oneself then providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred."

I’m not Pollyanna, and I know there is much more to it than what I’ve written.?

This is a clear business example, and what is calling you might not be.?

I KNOW the Universe is inviting us to free ourselves and pursue what at first seem to be preposterous possibilities!?

It all starts with listening to our David. Then the adventure begins.

We wouldn’t need war then, would we?
