Hiring Manager Lesson 5: People Rise or Fall to Your Expectations

If you want to build a legacy worth remembering, expect to win and lead others to do the same.? The best teams and company’s attract talent from other organizations by drawing them in.? Top performers know it is best not to just leave a position, rather to be “drawn” or excited about the one you are offering.?

What does leadership have to do with recruiting you may ask? Everything!

The best servant leaders understand this, build strong internal and external networks, lead productive teams, and win the war for talent.

What culture do you support and encourage?

What does the outsider see when they? interview with your team?

My first role in recruitment and formal leadership began in December of 1997.? AccuStaff (now Randstad) in Chattanooga, TN had a failing office on the verge of closing.? When I the Area Manager met with me, she explained the situation.? The bottom line was an office below budget, losing money, and a low performing staff. I accepted the role as Branch Manager and began work.? Within the first two weeks, both staff members resigned. I hired a former co-worker of mine and networked thru town to find our second staff member.? We expected to win and did.? As the leader, it was my responsibility to set the tone and share the vision of winning.? The next step was to hire employees who could work toward that vision and fit the culture.? In less than one year, we doubled revenue for that office.

One of the most challenging recruitment roles I’ve worked in was with Covenant Health. I joined the organization as the Director of Talent Acquisition in the middle of a staffing crisis. Within the first few months, we decided to complete a re-organization of the department. After hiring a completely new team, including several key interns, we set our sights on winning. A little over a year later, the HR Department won a President’s Excellence Award for Recruitment and Retention Improvement. “ People rise and fall to meet your level of expectations for them” John C. Maxwell. I expected to win and so did my team. We built a solid recruitment plan and engaged the hiring managers.?

It is never easy to change a culture, however it is incredibly rewarding to lead others to win for the first time.? You’ll change the career course for several along the journey.?

Build a legacy.?

Expect to win.?

Recruiting will be easier.
