Do you want more leads for your business at the expense of your reputation?
Of course you don’t!
If you sell your “expertise”.
And, perhaps have even invested in getting “certified” as a consultant or coach.
You know that your reputation didn’t get built over night.
You’ve built it over time…. perhaps decades!
And, how you’ve “shown up” in every moment during your career has created your character, values & skills that have impacted the results you get for your clients and how others see you.
As the “go to expert” in your field.
That said…it doesn’t take much to ruin that reputation.
Which is why I’m troubled by what I’m seeing and hearing from the consultants and coaches I speak to on a daily basis.
They want more clients.
And, they know they need to be proactively prospecting for new clients…always…if they want to keep their sales pipeline filled with qualified prospects wanting to hire them!
After all, the “high value” services and “high-ticket” prices they charge don’t “convert” overnight.
It takes time.
First, you need to make your ideal client know you exist (AWARENESS)
Then, you need to build trust, educate and qualify them (CONSIDERATION)
Finally, you need to show them why YOU are the best choice to solve their challenges (DECISION)
This is the basic “buyers journey”.
And if your “lead generation” process is jumping too quickly to any one of these steps.
You run the risk of RUINING your reputation.
And becoming more ANNOYING than you are HELPFUL.
Unfortunately, I find a lot of Consultants & Coaches want to find shortcuts.
They want to “push a magic button” and have floods of perfect clients beating down their door.
They continue to “spam” their LinkedIn contacts with automated messages that THEY wouldn't even respond to.
Yet somehow they think their prospects WILL be receptive to.
Here’s a clip I pulled from a 2016 Gary Vaynerchuk video to hammer home this point.
Give it a watch….you’ll know what I'm talking about :)
Want to see an extreme example of an "automated bot" fail? Check out this real engagement with Joe Biden's "bot" on Facebook on Aug 6, 2020. Cringe worthy!!
Or even worse....they DO get a positive, engaging response from a prospect on LinkedIn.
But they miss the reply message and the spammy automation tool they are using sends out a completely irrelevant, scripted message.
Clearly revealing that they are deploying a "spray & pray" approach to prospecting.
Again...negatively impacting their reputation (and the likelihood of actually landing that prospect as a client)
The problem is, they don’t want to “do the work” because they say they are “too busy”.
But the truth is, they are “too busy” because what they are doing right now to land new clients isn’t working.
And they are scrambling to try to figure out the "magic formula"
They think "being busy” is a sign of “being successful”.
But, they haven’t instilled habits that actually serve the goals they have set.
And therefore, they are not “successful”…they are just “busy”
Let me be clear when I say this.
If you expect to run some automation software, play the numbers game and spam your network as a “strategy” to land new clients…
- You are operating with a system that simply doesn’t work
- You may land some clients…but they will be terrible clients
The kind of clients that are desperate, with unrealistic expectation who think you can solve all their problems overnight.
Because you are attracting exactly who YOU are being.
Someone that is looking for some magical “quick” solution to their problems that quite frankly doesn't exist.
As you probably know, it takes insightful training, impactful coaching, proven systems and TIME to solve big problems and create lasting change.
Now...maybe YOU are not using these "spammy" tactics.
But you might still be having troubles consistently landing high-level clients that will pay you top dollar for your services.
Perhaps you think you are "above" having to do the prospecting and sales in your business.
You'd rather rely on inbound strategies like podcasting or paying for ads to drive leads or outsourcing your sales to some "high ticket closer".
My question to you is...
How's that working out for you?

Having some “oh damn…Trevor is describing me right now!” moments?
Good…that was my goal in writing this article.
To wake you up and make you realize that in order to create the successful business you’ve always dreamed about…
You need to stop trying to find a bandaid solution to land your perfect clients.
You need to shift your mindset, beliefs, habits & routines ….
And you need to prospect for new clients in a way that has ALWAYS worked for you in the past.
Where you build authentic, genuine relationships and focus on solving the pains & problems your perfect clients are experiencing in their business.
You need to be their “painkiller”.
And you need to get over the thought that in order to build a high 6 or 7 figure business, you need to remove yourself completely and "scale" your prospecting with some "cold" ad, email or call strategy.
Don't get me wrong, those tactics have worked in the past (and still do work to some degree when executed properly - and at the right time).
But your perfect client is much more savvy now.
They can see through your "pitch" disguised as "value" a million miles away.
And let's be honest, what you are doing right now to prospect for new business makes you sound EXACTLY the same as everyone else selling the same thing as you!
And, I don't have to tell you that your "competition" is increasing every day.
Even if they don't have the background, credentials and results that you do.
Your perfect client doesn't know that.
You need a way to stand out in the sea of "competition" so you can be the big fish in the small pond.
Long story short....what got you to where you are right now is not going to get you to the high 6 or 7 figure business you desire.
You need a way to differentiate yourself from the pack.
You need to create REAL connection with a specific, highly targeted audience.
You need to do the "unscalable" (right now).
So your prospects see you as the most logical solution to solve their problems.
Even if you are the most expensive solution!
