Do You Think You Might Have Something to Learn?
In these times things are a bit... well 'tricky' for most businesses. The COVID-19 threat has brought many businesses to a stand still, many people to a stop and getting the world restarted is likely to take some time, some social distancing and some thought.
Right now is the time to be looking forward, to begin to understand what it is you don't know, what you don't understand that you need to find an answer to. As a business we recognised this from the day our clients went into paralysis, shut down, went into hiding and lost their teams furlough... We had to change, adapt, move on-line, work from home, keep motivated, figure out home schooling and get to grips with the turmoil in our own heads.
As business leaders we were still needing to think about how we can market, attract and secure new business (a bit difficult when the focus is on the virus crisis, horrible death rates and the whole idea of selling, planning, marketing and trading seems like it belongs in a different world. Yet, from the outset, if your thoughts were akin to mine in anyway, initially there was the shock, the thought of wow, is this really happening? Then for me the period of denial (only recognised with hindsight)... it won't last long... we won't have the same lock down as China... it's only old people in China who will be effected... my business won't change... people will still need to work (initial denial might have been a bit misdirected). As the weeks progressed there have been moments of frustration (lack of direction; focus and knowledge), anger (does the news speculation help us or drag us to the brink of despair? Why don't we just end lockdown and get back to life as normal?) and moods that swing from the 'the end is in sight' to the 'this nightmare will never end'.
But isn't it obvious? As business leaders we have to be learning to adapt, to survive, to succeed despite the changed environment, despite the roller-coaster of emotions, news, deaths, social separation and economic swirl of doom. As business leaders we have to be planning and thinking our way forward, dealing with the immediate crisis and having our plans in place to ensure our business, our sales, our marketing our teams our suppliers our customers are all able to step out of this with us.
So, have your plans... Think like a lighthouse... plan A... use the main lamp... plan B... what if the main lamp blows?... plan C... what if the back up fails?... plan D... what if even that fails?... This is the thinking that has kept Portland Bill Lighthouse (well worth a visit) keeping shipping safe EVERY night since 1906!! They have their alternate plans for every situation... We have to have ours... You need to have Yours. There has never been a more important time to have your business plans... and there has never been a more important time to update and review them on a daily basis (if you need help, ideas or sessions with that please contact us).
The trouble with plans is they are hard to stick to when the environment is constantly changing... Which means you need to get better, more adaptable, more capable and as a business, more strategic. Look for the opportunities, look for the bounce, challenge your rule book and use the current environment to help your business to step up through this and beyond.
Stay focused. Stay strong. Learn something new every day.
