Do You Suck? Embracing Failure and Growth in Business

Do You Suck? Embracing Failure and Growth in Business

Have you ever felt like you just plain suck at something? You're not alone. In fact, embracing our weaknesses might be the key to unlocking our true potential in business and life. Let's dive into why sucking isn't so bad after all, and how it can actually propel you towards success.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Growth

Growing in business requires learning new skills:

  • Leadership
  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Strategy
  • Decision making
  • Asset allocation
  • Content creation
  • Writing
  • Advertising

But here's the kicker: learning these skills means facing our weaknesses head-on. It's uncomfortable, it's challenging, and yes, it can make us feel like we suck.

Why We Don't "Succeed": The Ego Problem

The number one reason many of us don't achieve the success we desire? Our fragile egos. We're so afraid of being seen as weak or incompetent that we avoid the very thing that could help us grow: failure.

The Success Equation

Success = Acquiring new skills + Doing what we don't know + Embracing failure

The more we can embrace our "suckiness," the better chance we have of winning in the long run.

Fixed vs. Growth Mindset: Which One Are You?

Carol Dweck's groundbreaking book "Mindset" introduces us to two fundamental ways of thinking:

  1. Fixed Mindset Believe abilities are fixed Avoid effort and failure Give up easily Feel threatened by others' success
  2. Growth Mindset Believe abilities can be developed Embrace challenges and failure Persist through setbacks See effort as the path to mastery

How to Embrace Your Suckiness and Grow

  1. Realize everybody sucks at something Remember, you're only seeing other people's highlight reels. Everyone has fears and struggles.
  2. Let your desire outweigh your ego What you want to achieve needs to be greater than the ego you're trying to protect.
  3. Be aware of the emotional cycle of change Uninformed optimism Informed pessimism Valley of despair Informed optimism Success & fulfillment

Understanding this cycle can help you push through the tough spots when you feel like giving up.

Questions to Ponder

As you reflect on your own journey, ask yourself:

  • What are you avoiding?
  • Are you operating from fear or courage?
  • Do you have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset?
  • Have you slipped into the comfort trap?
  • What parts of yourself are you afraid of people seeing?

Remember, embracing your weaknesses and being willing to fail are crucial steps on the path to success. So go ahead, suck at something new today – it might just be the best thing you do for your business and personal growth.

Nice article, Chris A. Evans. Honestly, I miss a part of the success equation, and that is to learn and improve. It's like some people I know who attend one after the other online course and forget to act. Evaluating and learning after doing what we don't know is indispensable. Would you agree?

Loved this approach “ embrace your suckiness.” Early when I started my first business I told myself embrace that there are tasks you honestly suck at or don’t care for. Learn them. Then live aware of the experts in alignment witn you and they will help propel you forward. And they did. I continue to hold this thought pattern. Thanks for sharing these points for me to reflect and ponder Chris.

Chris A. Evans I appreciate your bold question. As a thought leader in this area, I believe that everyone has areas in which they can improve, but it's important to focus on strengths as well. Instead of asking if someone sucks, we should encourage self-reflection and growth.
