TikTok the brain child of Zhang Yiming is about to experience something not unusual. The social app success is attributed to original content creation, with the ability to go viral while appealing to Gen z within a short span, sighting creative demeanour.
Undoubtedly, TikTok's popularity within a short span is linked to connection with Instagram and Facebook. Daily, hundreds of Instagram influencers share TikTok videos on their feeds and Instastories, playing an important role in the surge, not just in the download rate, but the number of users attracted to the social app.
So, it didn't come off as unusual when Instagram announced it will launch it's TikTok like Reels functionality come August in the US. Reels is a 15-seconds looping video clips set to music, built into Instagram enabling users to experience TikTok on Instagram. But this time, it won't be a cross social affair which aided the rise of TikTok on Instagram as Instagram seeks to keep the social shares to itself.
The move by Instagram is coming at a time the White House hinted to take action against the Chinese owned app, sighting national security exposure, especially as it concerns information gathering on American citizens. Since announcing to take down TikTok, the company has appointed a new CEO, ex-Disney executive and pulled out of Hong Kong after the region adopted a new national security law giving further power to Central Chinese Government.
If the ban pulls through, United States will join the list of countries who have placed a ban on the social app, wrecking havoc on influencers who have made the platform a source of livelihood most especially among Millennial and Gen Z. Over time, TikTok has proved to be a global app connecting creatives, you will recall that Nigeria based comedian Josh2funny #DontLeaveMeChallenge crossed 320 million views on TikTok sparking global virality and raising his social global dexterity.
Although, TikTok is making moves to woo the US lawmakers from effecting the ban with promise to creating 10,000 jobs in the US over the next 3 years and possibly consideration to setting up its headquarters in London among other locations. The question is, would this be enough to convince countries who have effected the ban and countries yet to effect the ban that TikTok has their interest at heart?
Personally I do not have all the answers, but if you are an influencer and TikTok is currently serving you lots of lemonade this is the best time to diversify. You've probably heard this a million time and may have been lazy about it, I tell you, no better time to diversify your followers to a reliable platform as YouTube than now.
