Deeply Listening and Speaking Freely is what When Women Speak is all about...
How often are we truly listened to and able to speak freely uninterrupted knowing that what we say is being met with love? Met with love regardless of the content and regardless of whether you think what you say is worth sharing, worth being heard, is or isn’t important, is mundane, ordinary or shout from the rooftops fantastic.
How we see showing up and speaking at When Women Speak is whatever you share will be just what wants to be said in the moment, so let the words tumble out and see what unfolds.
The When Women Speak Leaders are waiting with open ears and hearts to hear you speak and if you fancy being a WWS Leader holding space for people to speak with no agenda other than to use their voice and see what gets said then find out how here ~ https://www.wwsgn.com/lead
So what do we mean by deep listening?
At When Women Speak it simply means to listen with openness. There’s no listening skills required or being used, just pure openness to hear what’s being said. Have you ever tried to listen and then spent the whole time critiquing whether you’re listening correctly and wondering if the person speaking thinks you’re listening well enough? Forget all that and just be there.
Here’s what someone said about speaking and being heard in this way ~ “It gives you a safe space where you can speak thoughts, feelings or simply off load”.
What’s provided in a When Women Speak group is a safe space to explore aloud knowing no-one will interject whilst you’re speaking. The exploration could then turn into noticing more about a situation and seeing more clearly how things are not as solid and fixed as they so often seem to be. It’s an opportunity to hear for yourself what next step to take if any. It can be a valuable process in seeing where there’s resistance to what is, where there’s a wanting things to be different or where in some areas you feel at ease and in others you don’t. Whether insight and realisations occur or not, there’s no expectation placed on you or the group. Let whatever arises be what it is.
It’s all very simple but we hear so many times people say how magical it is.
When Women Speak Leader Fiona shares her first experience of being heard uninterrupted during a retreat run by Nicola Snoad October 2018 (I was there too as the Help):
“…I never feel like I have anything to say and I am scared to show emotion because that’s real stuff coming out. At the retreat we were all given the opportunity to speak. I knew I was going to have to say something so there was no point getting nervous. I was excited about a decision I had made to run my own retreat and Nicola gave me the opportunity to tell everyone. I stood up and I spoke and I was a bit over excited about what I was saying and everyone just listened. Even when I went silent no one jumped in. I had the space to be me and to speak freely. I had never stood and spoke in front of others before. It felt amazing. I have actually done quite a lot of speaking since and even lead some groups. So this has opened me up to believing I have something to say. It’s good to talk. Sometimes you hear something for yourself when you speak out loud.”
For everyone listening in a When Women Speak group the experience is often inspiring, touching, comforting and all manner of other emotions too. There’s a shared story, shared thoughts even when the content is different. There’s this knowing sense of connection that opens the heart and we get to see more for ourselves in hearing each other speak.
