Do you sometimes feel invisible at work?

Do you sometimes feel invisible at work?

The coming week is a big moment for PMI as we kick off our Global Summit at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

We’ll be talking about two game-changers in our field. One of them is AI. AI presents a unique opportunity to change perceptions of project management, and I’ll have a lot more to say about this later in the week.

But today, I want to focus on the second one. When I first started as President and CEO, I went on a listening tour. One thing stood out: project managers feel invisible in their organizations. I’ve heard this across continents and languages.

The data backs this up—only 27% of senior leaders describe project managers as “essential,” according to a global survey by PMI and PwC.

So, we are going to do something about it. Later this week, we’ll unveil a preview of a massive new PMI research program, reframing what project success is about, what project professionals should feel accountable for, offering insights into project success rates across industries and regions, and identifying key performance levers that can drive higher success rates.

This is a hopeful time for project professionals. The world will need millions of new project professionals in the next decade, and LinkedIn's 2024 study ranked project management as the fourth most in-demand competency in the world.

At the Global Summit, we’re starting a new conversation about reframing what success looks like in our field. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Project professionals, do you ever feel invisible at work? Let me know in the comments.

This really resonates with me. For a long time, despite leading initiatives at had me recognised at a global level as Future 50, I felt invisible within my own organization. It wasn’t until a new CEO took an interest in the success of a project that I was leading that I started to gain visibility and relevance internally. It was only then that I was given more opportunities to contribute to other significant projects within the institution. The fact that only 27% of senior leaders see project managers as essential explains why so many of us feel this way. We often operate behind the scenes, driving impactful results, yet struggle for recognition where it matters most—within our own organizations. I’m truly excited about PMI’s upcoming research and the focus on reframing what project success means. We need to elevate the role of project professionals and ensure that our contributions are recognized at all levels.

Thank you Pierre Le Manh !! I wish I had such a well-prepared article in my early years. Over the years, I’ve learned to communicate my desire for progress within organizations and how this advancement makes the company better, turning me into an intrapreneur bringing new projects to the table.

Not only at work, Pierre. I sometimes feel invisible in pictures like the one you posted here where I was helping to take the group picture before joining in. It turns out the picture taken before I joined the group was a better pick for your post. This is the story of many Project Managers. We make the world spin, many times, from outside of it. See you in LA!

My background is in live entertainment and in that world, you’ve done your job well if no one notices you were there. It means that things went seamlessly, no mistakes. But I think that the true test of character is when things don’t go the way they were intended and what do you do in those instances - how (as a leader) do you handle them.
