She asks me what we do in meetings all day.
I say we talk.
She asks me what we talk about.
I say we talk about the work we are going to do.
She asks me why we don’t do the work without talking about the work.
I tell her sometimes you can’t.
She asks me how long you need to talk about the work before you do the work.
I tell her sometimes it takes lots of meetings.
She asks me if this is why I have a calendar.
I say yes this is why I have a calendar.
She asks me how many meetings I have today.
I tell her I have meetings all day.
She asks me if I’ll talk about the work I am going to do all day without doing the work I have to do today.
I tell her yes.
Then she goes to the bathroom. I hear her peeing in the toilet. She never closes the door.
She comes out and she tells me she wants to have a meeting in her room.
I walk in and she’s sitting at the edge of her bed and she’s staring at me and she says nothing.
I ask her what this meeting is about.
She tells me that it’s about her room.
I ask her what about her room we need to have a meeting about.
She tells me that I asked her to clean up her mess.
I tell her I asked her to clean up her mess.
She tells me she wants to have a meeting to talk about how she will clean up her mess.
And tomorrow another meeting.
And another meeting.
And another meeting.
I ask her how many meetings it will take before she does the work.
She stares at me and asks slowly: do you see my point?
Thanks for reading. I, too, did it my way.

7 年Having conference rooms with only ledges (no chairs or tables) keeps meetings short and relevant. (This is why scrum daily meetings are 'stand-up'.) Do the same thing for online meetings by scheduling them for 15 minutes and having the decisions to be made laid out in advance. Avoiding meetings is NOT the solution. People working alone can waste days or weeks doing work that is irrelevant.
