Do you really know what a habit is?

Do you really know what a habit is?

When talking time management one of the most important steps in improving your productivity is recognising your habits (good and bad) and creating new rituals as well. But in order to do this we have to clarify…

What exactly is a habit?
And what did you mean by a ritual?

To break it down simply, habits are unconscious while rituals are intentional. But let’s talk a little more about what this means.

Habits are typically practical or functional in nature.

They serve specific purposes and fulfil specific needs, for example, brushing your teeth before bed, checking your phone first thing in the morning, or taking a walk after dinner. These can all be considered habits.

Habits are prompted, and there is always a cue that sets off the habitual action and there is always a reward at the end. Humans as we know, do not perform any action without a reward that comes with it. Even ‘bad’ habits, such as addictions, start off rewarding, and it is this feeling of reward that causes a person to repeat an action over and over again for it to then become a habit.

Now rituals, on the other hand are intentional and are symbolic actions performed with a deeper meaning or purpose.

We often associate them with traditions, cultural practices, and serve various functions such as marking significant life events, expressing gratitude, fostering a sense of connection, or promoting personal growth.

Examples of rituals include religious ceremonies, birthdays, meditation practices, journaling daily, or even how you start and end your day. If you’re working from home, then even the way you ‘go to work’ or ‘finish work’ can matter greatly and be quite ritualistic.

The main thing to observe here is that habits are automatic while rituals are intentional. (Although some rituals can become automatic through routine too). Both play key parts in our everyday lives and have significant impacts both on the ways we focus and the ways we destress in the day-to-day.
