Do you procrastinate often?

Do you procrastinate often?

Ahoy friends, I hope you all are doing great in the ups and downs of life. Today we are going to talk about "The Reason Behind Procrastination" and how we can deal with it.

Do you often find yourself in unproductive activities or wasting time on social media? Well if you do find yourself doing that, you aren't alone. Social media is a good source for giving yourself a mental rest but it can also be a good source of distractions and other problems like social comparisons and it can be very devastating at times. In fact, the majority of people (including me) from different age groups nowadays are addicted to scrolling through social media or playing video games while delaying almost all important tasks given at hand.

So, the question arises "Why Do We Procrastinate?" While there can be different reasons for different people behind procrastinating like you don't know how to start, you are too distracted to focus or you find your work unappealing to your inner passion. But most people misunderstand procrastination. "Procrastination is the stress coping mechanism for our mind." We most often, don't run from the difficulty of a task but from the stress, it's going to bring us with it.

We humans have made tremendous progress in almost every field but little we have given thought on how to deal with our mind and emotions. So when it comes to doing tasks that cause stress, we naturally tend to procrastinate and seek a moment of peace but the more we delay doing the task, the more we feel bad about ourselves.

There was a time when I was deeply merged in the habit of playing video games, and scrolling through my Instagram newsfeed and I was far away from studying for my semesters and doing anything productive that could possibly benefit my well-being and career. I know most of you will relate and understand what I am saying or what I was feeling at that time. But the question arises, how can we deal with it?

Three Ultimate Techniques To Beat Procrastination

  1. Analyzing what's causing stress: When we delay any task or run away from an important discussion, we are actually delaying the stress that it can cause us. Maybe it can be studying for an important exam that you feel it's way too difficult or a feedback meeting with your boss. To deal with it, first, you have to analyze why that particular task is causing you stress and think if there is a way to solve it. If it's a feedback meeting with your boss that you are delaying then you will have to ask yourself if this meeting causing you stress and why you don't want to do it. Once you have the cause then reason with it until you find a solution. For example, a feedback meeting with an executive or HR can really be stressful or scary and not necessarily but it can also be a reason to worry. The best you can do is to check on the facts and stand strong on your ground and the stress will fly away.
  2. Dividing a bigger task into smaller pieces: We as humans, are very ambitious towards our abilities and more often we set goals that are very challenging. The bigger a task is the lower will be its success rate or we can say it will have a higher failure rate. The best you can do to deal with a bigger ambitious and challenging task is to divide it into smaller goals and go after it.
  3. Set challenges and goals: There will often be times when you won't feel like doing anything or even getting out of your bed. At that instant, you can challenge yourself to do the task that holding you back and just go after it. For this to be successful, you will need to have a knack for taking on challenges. You can also set daily or weekly goals for long-term work and keep track of it.

Reward Yourself

Staying in the comfort zone is our natural tendency and we love doing it but stepping out of the comfort zone takes courage and determination. So when you successfully complete your targeted goal even if it's an hour or reading then reward yourself because most people would have done it otherwise...
