Do you prioritize your well-BEing by planning your time off and vacations, before you schedule your business?

I recently read an email from my former coach, Rich Litvin, in which he shared several important questions. One question brought me back to the early days of my work with him:
Do you prioritize your well-being by planning your time off and vacations before you schedule your business?
When I worked with Rich in 2016, I hired him to learn how to create a thriving business. However, he initially focused on questions that led me to think about designing my life before working on my business strategy. I quickly realized that I wasn't prioritizing my well-being before my business.
I quit my job in 2014 to create my business so I could live my dream life, having time for myself and family, working out, etc. But one year after this bold decision, I found myself struggling with my business and neglecting all the things I had promised to improve in my life.
I thought, like many, that I'd take care of myself once my business improved. But since it wasn’t improving, I unconsciously decided to keep staring at my laptop screen, doing whatever I could and at least feeling good about being busy trying. It even sounds foolish now that I write it, but hey...
We live in the feeling of our thinking, not in the feeling of our circumstances.
Even while working with Rich, it made sense to create a life design, but I still couldn’t see how shifting my priorities was more important.
The real breakthrough came when I decided to conduct a series of interviews in 2017 with a significant group of business owners. After conducting the interviews, I realized an unexpected common factor: most of them had numerous regrets built during the time they were making their business work.
These successful businesspeople, who had been running their businesses for more than a decade, shared heartbreaking stories and regrets such as:
- I lost my partner in the process of building my business because I spent most of my time on it.
- I love playing tennis, but it’s been around six years since I last held a racket!
- I live with my family, but I honestly don’t know my kids, and they don’t know me!
- I had a stroke and luckily recovered, but it took a huge toll on my health.
These individuals had the best intentions to create thriving businesses to live their dream lives with their loved ones. However, they didn't see that they were neglecting the most important aspects of their lives, using the excuse that they had to focus on the business so everyone could enjoy its perks. There were no bad intentions, just a lack of consciousness, and the same was happening to me!
Thankfully, I managed to see it in time. I worked on creating my own Life Design based on my deepest desires rather than the expectations of others. Once I was completely clear and committed to it, I focused, together with my coach, on creating a business strategy that could sustain my Life Design, not the other way around.
After that, I turned around the situation with my business, and more importantly, I maintained my commitment to my Life Design. I took one day off (Fridays back then; nowadays, it's Wednesdays) and started investing time every day not only in my business but also in myself and my family (reading, working out, studying the Bible, sharing meals with my wife and my son, etc) .

In my decade in business, I’ve seen the same situation countless times, with everyone from business owners and entrepreneurs to professionals in different fields.
So, as you can see, this is not just a simple question. This is a question that could change the trajectory of your life and make a huge difference.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all-in for growing financially. After all, we all need money, whether we like it or not, to pay for wonderful trips and beautiful things. But you can create money while losing the most important people and experiences in your life, or you can create money while enjoying the most important people and experiences now.
I chose the second option, and I haven't met anyone who consciously wants to choose the first.
Here's the question again:
Do you prioritize your well-being by planning your time off and vacations before you schedule your business?
It is absolutely possible to live a fulfilling life now and very risky to pretend to live it later.
Just like I needed help from my coach, I’m here if you'd like to explore the possibilities of a more fulfilling and exciting life.
