Do you do this one.If not try this..

When you first start off trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. But if you keep going and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often times arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions.

Above is the quote by Steve Jobs, and one such solution is widely tried and accepted by many companies and has been successful in a wide range of industries. For instance, Car manufacturers use this to deliver quality products. Pilots use it to ensure the safe operation of aircraft and avoid crashes, and it's used in the medical industry to reduce errors and save lives.?

One such solution has saved numerous newborns and is widely accepted worldwide, and the solution followed is?CHECKLIST?- simple and elegant.?

In the past, when newborns had trouble breathing or were small and blue, doctors often labeled them as stillborn, and there was no protocol to resuscitate newborns or intervene medically and only hoped it lived.

In 1952, Virginia Apgar noticed this and wondered if she could do anything to save newborn lives. For example, as soon as they are born, a baby may need help clearing their airway to help them breathe, or a baby may need more oxygen, and an oxygen mask is placed over your baby's face to give them oxygen. So she developed the?checklist scoring(APGAR Score)?to assess a newborn's health immediately after birth and take actions based on that.

  • A?— Appearance: Newborns don't start circulating oxygen-rich blood until after they're born and have taken their first breath. Oxygen-rich blood makes babies turn from a bluish tone to a more pink color.
  • P —?Pulse: This measures your baby's heart rate and ability to pump blood.
  • G —?Grimace: Grimace is your baby's reaction to stimulation. Suction the baby's nose or mouth to test their reflexes.
  • A — Activity: Activity measures your baby's muscle tone by looking at the movement in your baby's arms and legs.
  • R —?Respiration: Respiration is the baby's breathing effort. It's determined by how much and how loudly your baby cries.

Each item is rated from 0 to 2, and a final score is arrived. The doctor captures these ratings after one minute and five minutes after birth. About 90% of infants have Apgar scores of 7 to 10, and a score lower than seven indicates that your baby may need medical attention, and necessary support is given to save newborn lives.

This checklist approach paved the way for the formation of neonatology in 1960, which is the care of the just-born infant, and the first neonatal intensive care unit was born. Now checklist scoring is used in hospitals from comas to the ICU.

If this can save lives, why not use it in your life/projects/programs to identify signs, enhance, and improve it to turn those successful? TRY IT OUT...?
