Do you need the reason?
How important is the reason for you?
When someone cancels on you?
When something has happened?
When someone makes a decision?
Often, we are obsessed with the why.
Sometimes, this is important to know.
Sometimes, it is meaningless.
Where is your energy and time better invested?
Accepting and carrying on, or finding the reason?

Stuck with no reason is more likely to discourage follow-up. If I know the person, reason is less important. Though sometimes my implication of the "likely" reason I associate to the situation also tends to be "discouraging", even on good friends. No details needing to share, but yes, I prefer to give reason and be honest about it. Taking it over to "family business". Inside a family (or other "social network" we go back to "plans and reality", also on our schedule and priorities planning and decision making.
It’s all about context which is an essential ingredient in our meaning-making processes
