Do you need ‘Paper Pushers’ or ‘Consultants as Partners’?

Do you need ‘Paper Pushers’ or ‘Consultants as Partners’?

The search was not exclusive this time with one of our new clients and hence in first go it took us two weeks to establish the fact that our offered candidate has never approached our client directly or through any other consultant! Having said that, the fact remained that the CV was with our client already! And I realized after sometime that it was courtesy our Paper Pusher Friends (Consultants)!

The modus operandi (of Paper Pushers) is – pull out 5-10 CV’s from job portals on a given mandate and forward to the client without even talking to the candidate! Later, upon shortlisting of the profiles by the client, ‘Paper Pusher Consultant’ then approaches the candidate for the role!!

Forget about what kind of services you are rendering to the client by being a Paper Pusher, I mean; is it even justified that you offer a candidate’s CV to a company without even talking to the candidate?! Sometimes a candidate might not even want to apply for that particular position or in that particular company! But courtesy my ‘PP Friends’, the company might feel that this candidate keeps applying with them!!

Now, as a consultant, how do you compete with such Paper Pusher’s, I realize at least we cannot!

I also realize that this ‘PP working model’ won’t stop completely because it probably works for some Consultants and Companies both, which is fine! Having said that, it doesn’t work with us at all for 2 simple reasons -

When forwarding the CV’s to our clients,

1) We believe in Quality of the CV’s and NOT Quantity #ClientTimeValue

2) We believe in Privacy of the Candidate’s profile #CandidateProfilePrivacy

Hey Madan, In my understanding it's an quantity vs quality debate. For senior, specialist and critical roles such PP policy wouldn't lead to result at the same time for certain roles an mass approach might save time. Key is the "context" . One size don't fit all.

Agree. As a consultant you should have a thorough Knowledge about the candidate. The candidate and consultant should act as a partner to have a fruitful collaboration. I have experienced this concept with you as a consultant

I faced this a lot many times getting calls from such PPs saying their client has selected my resume and will give me a chance to go through their interview process... they dont reveal the name of the company and I respondes saying I dont play Blind! It turns out the JD is absolutely not at all fitting my imagination and then I used get angry on these guys for pushing me into something I never asked for.... well written Madanji

well articulated...

With so Many so called online portals and data analytics of just matching skills...this will pose a bigger challenge to true consultants going forward. However for senior or crucial positions the value of consultants who make the effort will remain.
