Do You Need a Business Analyst?

Here are a few statistics from the website projectmanagementworks.co.uk, in an article titled Project Failure Statistics: The Shocking Truth:

  • Project success rate – that is, the project’s delivered on time, within budget, and with all the required features and functions: 39%
  • Projects that are “challenged” – that is, they’re late and/or they’re over budged and/or they have fewer than the required features and functions: 43%
  • Projects that fail – that is, they’re cancelled prior to completion or delivered but never used: 18%
  • Projects that don’t even bother to measure Return On Investment (ROI): 60%
  • Average percentage of features delivered: 69%
  • Average cost overrun: 59%
  • Average time overrun: 74%

That’s why you need a Business Analyst.

People (often recruiters) ask why I “regressed” from Project Manager to Business Analyst. Because I learned early on that the Business Analyst can make or break a project. I would argue that it’s a role at least as important as the Project Manager’s, if not more so.

The Business Analyst can see the big picture and will draw it for you.

The Business Analyst can tell you exactly what the business needs, and what it doesn’t.

The Business Analyst can tell you when the business needs the project. Sometimes timing is everything.

The Business Analyst can assess the impact of the new product or system on the business.

The Business Analyst can assess the true value of the project.

The Business Analyst can tell you who’s going to be affected, and how.

The Business Analyst can solve inevitable problems.

If you want to talk about it, drop me a message.

In the CMMS community, a business analyst is very important. This role is the intermediary between the working level and the system analyst. He identifies configuration changes, new reports, training needs, and culture issues. He delivers the technical specification. He can also be involved with proactive error checks.
