I vividly remember details of my education from Kindergarten to my Graduation Day at Wichita State University. As the years go by you start to look forward to the next year, or heaven forbid FINALLY BEING DONE WITH SCHOOL. High School was always built up to be "the Greatest Years of your life!" And for the most part it was. However, a major part of the grand deception that society had romanticized was that once you graduated, you were done learning. Of course, some of us went on to College therefore volunteering to continue our education. Then FINALLY you are done with your Bachelors and now have a piece of paper announcing that you are smart, able to complete tasks, and eligible for hire.
Now you find yourself in the market for a job, you interview well, and land a job. It isn't your dream job, but most adults don't really know what that is anyways. After filling out all the required paperwork, it is time for... You guessed it! MORE LEARNING!!! They changed the name to Training, so that you do not feel like you are in school. Naturally, the length and content is not nearly what school was, and it is more focused towards the specific knowledge that your new employer wants you to learn. Of course there is also on the job training that allows you to see how all this works together.
You are reading this, thinking... What are you getting at?
We are NEVER DONE learning. There, I admitted what your youthful self thought was done once you are in your early 20's.
As a business owner, you have two major responsibilities when it comes to education. Continue to learn and grow yourself and to train and educate those that work with or for you.
Educating those that work for and with you is often a challenge that can cause more than occasional frustration. The business is your baby, and you want everyone involved to be as passionate as you are and care as much as you do. You must find ways to keep their attention and keep them engaged. This is itself is quite the challenge, but one of the MOST difficult parts of having a team is LISTENING to their ideas and putting merit in the FACT that you do not know everything. I know that one hurts, huh?
It is easy to put yourself on the back burner as a business owner, as you are constantly being pulled from one project or problem to the next. But in not investing in your future, where are you leaving your company? If you are not changing and learning, you will eventually be far behind the competition and the ever evolving markets that you may never recover.
I know that this is not life altering in theory, but NOT continually bettering yourself and those around could prove detrimental to you and your business. There are significant reasons that the wealthy are always reading and placing people smarter than themselves in strategic positions to better their business.
