Do You Live In Your Past?

Don't get me wrong, our memories are very important and I'm not saying that we should forget our past.

In fact, I'm a great believer that reminiscing about what we've done is great and thinking fondly and looking back at our past isn't bad.

But when you're living in the past, that is a different matter.

I don't mean living in the past in the way that we're wearing the same clothes that we did as a teenager or in our twenties, you might be surprised to know mine don't fit me anymore.

I'm talking about the things that have happened in our past and that are unhelpful, that we use to define how we are today.

Here are eight ways to let go of your past and live a happier life.

1. Examine your life - Look at what is holding you back from living the life you want and work towards achieving that life. We are all capable of achieving it.

2. Do not dwell on the negative - We all have some negative in our lives. However, negative thoughts are unproductive and distract us from the positive in our lives. Positive thoughts create positive results.

3. Let your emotions flow - Many people try to ignore their emotions, which is a key to understanding how you feel, as they're usually a result of our thoughts. Sometimes you just have to let them all out.

4. Learning from your past experiences - Take all your past experiences as learning opportunities, especially the bad ones, and turn them into a positive.

5. Expand your view of yourself - Once you've confronted your past it is time to concentrate on you. Spend time with yourself, don't be afraid to take risks and learn what you are passionate about.

6. Don't wait for an apology - We must all learn to forgive, maybe not forget, but with forgiveness comes escape from what has happened. It is not worth waiting for that apology from someone because they may never do it and you are stuck in that moment.

7. Stop being the victim - When you feel like a victim, your thoughts will draw you to past trauma and how everything goes wrong for you. Instead be the hero, acknowledge what has happened to you is hard that you've come through and you take control of your life and become a better person.

8. Live in the moment - Enjoy your life for what is, not what it was. Look around, be grateful what you have. And remember, we cannot get our time back and each minute that we live, we will never be able to repeat.

Remember, life is hard and those that say it isn't are lying to you. However, we're all able to take control of our life, if we want to that is.

It's not easy and requires you to be honest with yourself, put in hard work and have commitment, but we are not the person we were in the past and though we're enabled to change the past, we are able to change our future for the better.
