Do You Like Your Job and Yourself?

Maya Angelou has a beautiful insight, among many:

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

This resonates deeply with my work as a happiness and leadership coach, and it's the focus of today’s newsletter.

Are You Excited to Get to Work Each Day?

Do you wake up eager to contribute to a vision at work that you truly believe in? If not, it’s worth asking yourself why. Are you clear on what that vision is, and does it align with your own values?

Consider this: Out of 8,760 hours in a year, you likely spend about 2,920 hours sleeping. If you work a standard 40-hour week with two weeks off, you’re spending 2,000 hours a year on the job – that's 23% of your time. For many of us, the reality is closer to 30% or more when you factor in overtime, not to mention rising early to get ready for work and the time you spend thinking about it. Why settle for a job that doesn’t fulfill you when it takes up such a significant part of your life? Wouldn't you prefer to be happy instead?!

The Happiness Continuum

Let’s dive into what happiness really means. Marci Shimoff, in her book Happy for No Reason, describes a continuum of happiness:

  • Unhappy: A state many find themselves in too often.
  • Happy for Bad Reasons: Temporary highs from unhealthy sources.
  • Happy for Good Reasons: Joy from positive, healthy experiences.
  • Happy for No Reason: An inner state of peace and well-being, independent of external factors.

Shockingly, the majority of people worldwide report feeling unhappy or depressed. The World Health Organization ranks depression as a leading cause of disability, second only to heart disease.

Finding the Silver Lining

Despite what might seem like a predetermined “happiness set-point” from your upbringing and experiences, you can change it. You have the power to be happier, to reach that state of being “happy for no reason.” It requires commitment, but it’s achievable.

I’m living proof. I spent much of my life battling emotional struggles, even severe depression. But I also had an innate determination to never give up. While that stubbornness was often criticized, it ultimately saved me and helped me move forward to achieve daily happiness.

Everyday, I wake up inspired, and grateful for life’s beauty. Of course, there are still challenges and tougher days, but by practicing certain techniques and embracing my resilient spirit, I’ve learned to love life more deeply. As I continue to reach deeper levels of “happy for no reason,” my life presents me with increasingly wonderful opportunities. Yours can, too.

Where Do You Fall on the Continuum?

And more importantly, how motivated are you to elevate your happiness?

How Do You Get There?

In our first newsletter, we discussed Yale Professor Dr. Laurie Santos's work, which highlights that acquiring “more” – whether it’s money, possessions, or status – doesn’t lead to lasting happiness. These are fleeting joys that our brains quickly adapt to.

Each of our newsletters has explored different aspects of achieving enduring happiness. I encourage you to revisit them and identify the points that resonate most with you.

Do You Want to Love Your Work and Your Life?

To answer “yes!” to the question, “Do you like what you do, how you do it, and yourself for doing it?” requires dedication to learning a process and practicing it daily. The natural result will be finding work that you love and feeling great about yourself and your life.

To help you start this journey, I’m hosting a 5-Day LIVE Event from August 26-30, here on LinkedIn. We’ll dive into foundational concepts and daily challenges designed to integrate these practices into your routine, both at work and at home, with sessions starting at 10:30 a.m. PDT (California time) each day.

To make this experience even more impactful, I’ve invited a group of esteemed colleagues—professionals I’ve had the privilege of working with and who have inspired many of the ideas and content in our previous newsletters—to join me. Together, we will share key practices and insights, free of charge, that have proven transformative for clients.

Pre-register now to receive an exclusive jump-start video that will help you get the most out of these five days. You won’t be spammed or bombarded with emails—I respect your time and your choice to find the right path for you.
