"Do you like winning more ?"? OR "Do like hate losing more?"?
I hate losing, which is why I will keep winning!

"Do you like winning more ?" OR "Do like hate losing more?"

"Do you like winning more ?"
OR
"Do like hate losing more? "

This was a question I was asked at my final interview for my current company Talisman almost 4+ years by my CEO. This question has a lot of meaning to me and always stayed with me for a long time as I proceeded my career as a recruiter.

At first glance, both lines to this question may have the same meaning, but depending on which answer you choose it can really outline what type of person you are.

To me, this is what each line means:

  • Do you like winning ?more? – It shows you are person that enjoys the feeling of success and because you are addicted to that feeling of winning/success you always want it to keep going. ??

Or

  • Do you hate losing more? – This shows you are person that knows the feeling of failure and losing out to others makes you angry and frustrated and makes you want to do whatever you can to win again. Because you hate losing, it pushes you to work harder than anyone. ??

Both answers are good characteristics a recruiter should have, but for me I think “Do you hate losing more” sympathize with me more. As a person that was rejected by more than 20 agencies, it really took a lot of effort to get to where I am today. I hated that I lost, that I wasn’t picked and that I wanted to make those 20 agencies regret not picking me! This is what lead me to my success today. ????

?? So why am I talking about this now? ??

As I entered my 4th year as consultant, I was beginning to worry that I was losing my drive and fighting spirit after being used to success and winning recently as a top consultant. But a few weeks ago I played a badminton tournament and was able to win with my team. At beginning I only joined the tournament, because my friends asked me to join and really didn’t care whether we won or not. But as the tournament proceeded, I could suddenly feel my drive as an ex-player come back again telling me not to lose. I realized that I really am a person that hates losing (I guess I really am a sore loser lol ??). Winning this tournament really helped me to remember lots of feelings I had forgotten recently.

Maybe because of this tournament, my drive of hating to lose has been becoming larger again. Recently there was a networking event hosted by another agency on LinkedIn that I was very interested in joining to purely just meet new people and gain information in a new industry I had been studying. 3 days prior to the event the host contacted saying that I cannot join because I am a recruiter from a competing agency. I was very shocked….. I thought this was a public event to meet people and to learn new things. But it turns out was a marketing scheme by that agency to get candidates and promote their company's reputation. Ultimately it is business, and there nothing I can do about it, but I was very disappointed in that agency. The least they could of done was write no recruiters from other agencies, rather than make it look like a nice public event for everyone. In the end though because of this frustration of what this agency did, it really made me want to not lose to them now. It's funny cause they tried to scout me 6 month ago and I quite like them, but now I am really motivated to take them down in their own industry and strength!

Forwarding to what is my point in this post?

I am really glad my CEO asked me that question 4 years ago, because it was such a good question that it has become something that has stayed with me this whole time and helped me to realize what type of person I am and how I push forward.

So let me ask you:

"Are you are person who likes winning more ?" or "Are you a person who hates losing more?"
