Do you learn only to earn?

Few days ago, someone on my batch mates social media group shared a news article about a milk vendor buying a helicopter. One of us wondered aloud if there was a correlation between education and money.

I will keep the discussion on the obvious stereotyping aside for another day. The questions that that discussion raised in my mind was that do we learn only to earn? Do we look at our careers only from a monetary perspective?

Now don’t get me wrong! I do understand that earning money maybe a part of our career and an important one at that. However making it the sole purpose of learning or even working can lead to a lopsided perspective of our career.

No matter how cliché they may sound job satisfaction and personal growth are important too. I do believe that for us to be happy, job satisfaction and personal growth play an equal if not bigger role than money.

Over the last year I have been fortunate to connect with students who are curious and want to learn various things and not all of it is from a career or earning perspective. Conversations with these youngsters is a delightful and learning experience for me.

Maybe it is time we think of education beyond certifications. Maybe it is time we think of wealth beyond money. Surely it is time to know that happiness is more than certificates or money.

Let's learn out of curiosity and to increase our knowledge. And not just to milk it for money!

I enjoy learning, and I also enjoy reading. So I read a lot and learn even if it is not directly related to my career and my work related skills. I think it is important to learn because it not only increases knowledge but also widens your perspectives. When I was completing a certificate course out of interest and to improve my skills, I met a lot of people that were from diverse fields and interacting with all of them was a great learning for me.

Well said! Purpose in everything, even learning makes such a difference to the journey over destination POV. I love to keep challenging myself with anything I do personally and professionally to ask “who am I” in this pursuit. “What do I want” in this pursuit. And most importantly “what will I be willing to do to protect the 1st two questions”.
