With the regulatory legislations in data protection such as GDPR / KVKK, an accepted understanding of how to obtain, process, share and protect data, especially personal data, has started to develop. Data governance capability is one of the most important indicators of the maturity level of this understanding in a company. Exactly first we need to know where our data is.?A decade ago, for an organization, it was simple to locate data as it was all on-site, on local file servers at its headquarters. Many organizations are now using public and private clouds, sharing sites, local regional servers, and hybrid solutions integrating some or all of these platforms. While this has been great for efficiency and access, we just didn’t have a good grasp on where all of the data streams were coming in, how the different departments were utilizing the data, where they were storing the data, and how they were receiving the data. There was a lot of work to do to discover all of this. File auditing tools helped us identify where files are and where they’re being transferred. But we also need to identify who has access to the data and who is responsible for it. To begin, we started by collecting cross-functional data repositories from within the business. IT people have an idea of what is out there, but it is important to have people from sales, marketing, legal, et cetera, identify what data and databases they use.
