Harnessing the Power of Digital Mental Health for Patients with Chronic Conditions
THIS WAY UP Team
Team of experienced mental health professionals at the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD). THIS WAY UP is a joint NFP initiative of UNSW & St Vincents Hospital, Sydney.
As healthcare continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: the intersection between physical and mental health is more connected than ever. Chronic conditions can significantly impact mental wellbeing, and this is something we see day in and day out in primary care. But what if we could provide a more flexible, scalable solution to help patients manage both? That’s where digital mental health programs come in.
A recent study led by Dr Christine Shiner at the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety & Depression (CRUfAD) offers exciting insights into how digital mental health services are transforming the way patients with chronic conditions access care.
Let’s dive into the findings and what they mean for your practice.
Key Takeaways from the Study
Chronic Conditions are Prevalent
Dr Shiner’s study found that 72% of THIS WAY UP users reported living with at least one chronic condition, and over one-third were managing multiple conditions. Chronic pain and musculoskeletal issues were the most frequently reported. In addition, 27% of users were living with a disability—highlighting the complex needs of these individuals.
The Mental Health-Physical Health Link
For 95% of users with chronic conditions, their physical health directly impacted their mental wellbeing. This finding echoes what many of us in healthcare already know: chronic illness often comes with an emotional toll. However, there’s good news. An impressive 86% of those who used THIS WAY UP reported improvements in both their physical and mental health after using the program. It’s clear that digital mental health services have the potential to support patients holistically, addressing multiple aspects of their wellbeing.

Why Digital is the Future
For many patients, particularly those with chronic conditions or disabilities, accessing care can be a challenge. This study found that nearly half of users with chronic conditions were drawn to digital mental health services specifically because of the accessibility and flexibility they offer. Being able to access support remotely, outside regular office hours, is a game changer—especially for patients with mobility issues or those balancing treatment with busy schedules.
What Does This Mean for Healthcare Providers?
Complementing Traditional Care with Digital Tools
As clinicians, we’re constantly looking for ways to enhance the care we provide to patients. Digital mental health programs like THIS WAY UP offer a flexible, evidence-based solution that can complement the traditional interventions you already deliver. Internet-delivered CBT (iCBT) is one such example, offering patients the opportunity to engage with mental health support at their own pace and in their own time.
Supporting Patients with Complex Needs
Patients living with multimorbidity or disabilities often require a tailored approach to care. Digital mental health tools are an essential component of this, allowing for scalable and accessible mental health support. By integrating these digital solutions into your care plans, you can provide comprehensive support to even the most complex cases—without adding strain to your practice.
The Path Forward: Embracing Digital Mental Health
The healthcare landscape is rapidly evolving, and digital mental health is at the forefront of this change. For patients managing chronic conditions, these tools offer a lifeline—making mental health care accessible, flexible, and effective. As providers, embracing these tools not only enhances patient outcomes but also ensures we’re delivering the kind of care that meets patients where they are.
