Do you know what hurts a wetsuit?

Do you know what hurts a wetsuit?

1. Tear

?

When struck by a sharp object or grabbed by a sharp object it can tear and cause damage. Examples include fin cuts, nails or other objects that cause tears in neoprene.

So how do we prevent this?

Be careful of anything that might catch your wetsuit and be careful pulling any mesh panels.

?

2. Base of zip tear

?

When there is too much pressure on the back of the zip, the bottom of the zip can tear from the surrounding neoprene. This is also related to the age and size of the wetsuit.

To avoid this, you need to use your hands to make the place of the back bottom panel when you zip it up and don't bar your clothes to lend to others. A wetsuit that fits your size may not necessarily fit others.

?

3. Split seam

?

When putting on or taking off the wetsuit, baring the suit on an object or using too much force on the seams can result in the neoprene tearing from the seams, or the seams splitting and the stitching coming loose.?The quality as well as the age of this wetsuit is relevant.

That's why you need to use some tools to assist you when putting on and taking off your wetsuit and be gentle with it.

?

4. Ripped/rough neoprene

?

Often at the hips or elbows, the neoprene creates a rip or arough, either directly through the nylon surface.?This is caused by abrasion or rubbing against rough surfaces (rocks, kayaks, boards, etc.).

So we need to avoid overuse on rough surfaces and also install a protective mat on problem areas.

?

5. Delamination

?

Nylon can come off/separate from neoprene due to pressure or repeated use.?The nylon is grabbed by an object and pulled apart, or the adhesive becomes less effective with use.

To prevent this, you need to be alert to anything that might grab the wetsuit and be gentle when putting on and taking off the wetsuit.

?

6. Broken zip slider

The slider breaks off from the zip; the pulley comes off from the slider; the slider rusts and won't move because the top stopper has come away from the zip and too much force breaks the slider.

When using zips, the movement needs to be light. Support the bottom of the zip with your hand and clean the slider and zip teeth regularly.

7. Knee pads

When knee?pads reach a certain age or are of substandard quality, the neoprene inside will compress or wear out.

So look carefully when buying and avoid cheap/printed knee?pads.
