Do You Know The Primary Role Of Your Resume?
I was invited to speak at a career forum late last year. Attendees ranged from job seekers to professionals already working in their field.
Once I got the invite, I thought of brainstorming some icebreakers to start the session.
Immediately, I got some ideas for resume writing and general job search.
One of the questions I asked the audience was about the function of the resume. Surprisingly, a number of the audience didn’t get the answer correctly. They went the other way.
I agree that this question can be tricky.
I eventually let them know the correct answer, and we proceeded to the rest of the questions.
So here I am asking you the same question: “What is the role of your resume”?
If you picked the first answer, you got it wrong. Sorry! If you chose the last one, you got it wrong as well. The correct answer is to help you land an interview.
Why The Job Of Your Resume Is To Help You Land An Interview
Your answer to this question will determine your approach to writing your resume for job applications and ultimately decide whether or not you get invited for an interview.

Your immediate priority when applying for a role is an interview. Not the actual job.
Knowing this simple function of your resume is important for your job search journey. If you do not understand what your resume should do, you will likely be in for a long job search.
