Do you know the needs of new generation? Millennials, who are they? How to manage them? Lets discuss it.....

Millennials (also known as Generation Y) born in 1981-2000, makes up almost a third of the world labor market today. They will become the dominant group of employees to 2020,  and after another 5 years, the current twenty-year-old will take key positions in many companies, transmitting the values of their generation and changing HR policy. Learning about the needs of generation Y today allows us to understand how to manage them tomorrow.

What are the features of this generation?

The formation of values of generation Y was influenced by factors such as globalization and rapid development of information technologies, mobile communications, the Internet, social networks. Looking at the development of modern technologies, they make sure that nothing is impossible: today you cannot have something,  but tomorrow it will be able to invent, grow, build. This conviction grows into belief in one's own strength. "We will win ourselves, we will achieve everything  ourselves" - this is the main motto of the generation. The ability of young people to navigate the ocean of information, quickly master any gadget allows them to optimize their working skills and not only to quickly learn new things, but also to work when they are interesting and most effective, to be creative and offer extraordinary solutions."

These are definitely people with a high degree of inner freedom. They make decisions quickly enough, in most cases without long and deep analysis and reflection. In their paradigm, there is no characteristic of the generation of the 1970s, the understanding of the word "necessary". If they try to force them to do something they do not want, they can refuse and are ready to transfer the situation to the conflict zone. Rather, they tend to discuss on an equal footing and arguments. Millennials simply do not understand the lack opportunities to work remotely. They are almost the same with the technology and want to adjust the work as much as possible to their own comfort.

The main task of TOP managers today is to retain talented young employees. They come, learn then  go, constantly searching for something better. The phenomenon that provokes that kind of turnover is called "Job-Hopping". As a result, companies are forced to increase the budget for training of employees, but this is not enough. To meet the expectations and needs of the digital generation, it needs to be surprised them, interested them,  constantly looking for new L&D formats (Learning and Development) Money is very important for them, but even for the sake of big money, they will not stay long with  boring work from 9 to 18. Millennials should be in awe of what they do, then they will be effective in work. Generation Y needs constantly  fun. They want to reach leadership positions as soon as possible. And if it is impossible to do in your company, according to statistics, 60% of the Millennials will leave the company.

So, how to keep them in the company and how to make them being effective?

  • If you want to keep the NEXT generation in the offices, it is necessary to create maximum comfort and balance between work and life within the company itself. It can be resting and entertainment rooms. Sports corner. Possible free services, such as delivery, dry cleaning, language training in the office, etc., any innovation that helps employees to save their time.
  • Millennials tend to influence business. You can set up a mobile app company for new ideas. Establish a grant for the most worthy idea of business development. Allow them to develop their own projects within the company.
  • It is important for the new generation to benefit not only the company, but also the whole society. It is important for the company to organize charity events, funds, social groups, environmental events: everything that can unite them into a common goal that benefits the world.
  • The ideology of this generation: optimizing time costs. Diagrams, illustrations and graphs will tell them much more than weighty volumes of professional literature. Generation Y is online 24 hours 7 days a week. They should receive information at a convenient time. New knowledge needs to be accessed from any multimedia device.
  • Use the game elements to control them. (Gamification). Employee – gamer, moving on to the next level (new TOP position, promotion or a new important project) they need to be involved in the educational process, and this is a clear incentive to them. One of the main advantages of the game in education – a gamer (employee), can immediately see the results that for the impatient generation Next is an important factor. As young people have grown up with gadgets in their hands, the use of game elements is becoming the most effective way to manage them. And no matter how this gamification is expressed: fitness applications, loyalty program in the form of airline miles, Significant discounts on the most popular clothing brands or restaurants. Gamification is and will remain the main system used to motivate people to fulfill their goal.
  • You can organize an online screen, real-time employee Data can be tracked on the big screen, make notifications about achievements on TV screens and mobile applications. Showing the "gamers" how their personal contribution helps in profit company growth, you help them realize the importance of their work. You will nurture a culture of teamwork and cohesion, giving this generation the recognition they need so much. The ability to display performance data in real-time on monitors, mobile apps and television screens in conjunction with the use of ratings at different levels, task, indoor levels and competitions in real-time to help uncover the strengths of Millennials and engage them. And this trend is constantly evolving. Knowing how to use gamification strategy is what separates successful companies now from those who are just "trying to keep up."

The reason gamification has been and will continue to be so successful with this generation, is that it combines the fact that they understand most of all:

?Technology, data, promotion, competition and game elements?

Gamification is based on the fact that it increases activity for well-defined goals in easy and unobtrusive ways, creating routes for progress. Defining goals, measuring performance, displaying the feedback in real-time, and noting the success of gamification itself does precisely what you need to do leadership while creating a culture of cohesion and atmosphere at work. To get the most out of your millennial employees, give them the fun, sense of value of their contribution, and encouragement for the most meaningful KPI company. It's a total win-win.

Liked the idea of gamification
