Do you know how to co-create?

Do you know how to co-create?

Last week I shared the key to embracing change is the concept of co-creation. Clearly, you want to know more. I think of co-creation as another way of saying, collaboration and seeking input to?create something together?where everyone feels they had a hand in the result.

?

There are multiple benefits to the process including:

  • Increased Acceptance:?When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to embrace change, even if it's initially challenging. ?
  • Deeper Engagement:?Feeling included in the process not only increases acceptance but also participation. When asked for input, you engage in the impact and create accountability for the results. ?
  • Reduced Anxiety:?Collaborative decision-making can alleviate fears and uncertainties, making the transition smoother.?Being in the know helps to manage the uncertainty and resistance. ?
  • Enhanced Outcomes:?Diverse perspectives increase innovative solutions and better results. Two heads are better than one, as long as there are still clear decision criteria, and you don’t end up with too many cooks in the kitchen.

?

Applying Co-Creation to Your Life

Whether you're leading a team through a major organizational change or simply trying to implement new habits, consider these tips:?

  • Involve Stakeholders:?Seek input from those who will be affected by the change, not just those deciding on it. Often the best ideas come from those closest to the work. ?
  • Active Listening: Don’t come in thinking you know the answer.?Pay attention to others' concerns and ideas. Ask questions and stay in a place of curiosity. ?
  • Collaborative Decision-Making:?Work together to find solutions that everyone can support. Consensus is not necessary and can often lead to a lesser solution as the one that everyone can agree to. Rather, have a decision maker explain how the voices were considered and how the decision was made. Address the concerns. ?
  • Transparency in Communication:?Keep everyone informed and engaged throughout the process. This doesn’t mean telling everyone, everything. But enable people to ask questions regularly, provide updates, and share the thinking process. ?
  • Celebrate Milestones:?This stuff is hard. Acknowledge and reward progress, not just the end goal. Small wins help maintain momentum.

This content was driven from last week’s article about maintaining culture during change. If your organization is experiencing that challenge, we can help with that.

?

In our?workshops,?we often engage in an exercise to define our ideal culture. This involves defining how we want to work together and making clear commitments to action. What does our culture look like on a daily basis?

?

Culture is not just what we do, but how we do it. When you co-create, you create acceptable, manageable, and even desirable change.

?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you experienced a significant change recently? How did you navigate the process? ?

Keep connecting,

The right way to do it, Michelle, as my former federal agency would often devise and implement plans without benefit of those who had to do them, and I always insisted that they bring us in during the conception and planning phase, and not only in the execution phase, for we knew best how to make it happen.

Love the idea of co-creating. I need to think about how to incorporate it into my work.
