Can you remember growing up and constantly hearing this statement,
Youths are the leaders of tomorrow?
If you can, do you still agree with it?
My reply is this, “Why wait?”
I believe that the youths aren’t the leaders of tomorrow because to be a leader starts rights now. To be a leader isn’t about occupying a position or fulfilling a role. It means to provide a solution to a problem. And, you don’t have to know all the answers, you can find the answers you need.
A leader doesn’t have to do it all. The ability to work with the right people who produce quality results is an outstanding leadership trait.
So, what am I saying?
You don’t need to wait till you become a leader (have a role) to be a person who can create change. Rather, when you produce change locally or globally, then you are a leader.
Are you scared of starting?
Sometimes, it’s easy to get burdened by the ideas you have, or the project you want to take on. But, don’t let that hesitation make you lose out on an opportunity for growth.
What can you do?
- Look for what you love to do.
This could be singing, drawing, painting, riding a bike, or something peculiar to you. Identify it.
- Think, Think, Think.
Think about what you can do differently.
Think about how you can show off what you love to do (marketing).
Think deeply about the benefit and value of your choice.
- Draw up a plan
State your personal answer to the questions; why, what, how, where, and when.
Through these three points, you will find out a way that YOU can produce a change in your community and the world.
A mentor of mine, Toyin Bamidele once said, “Think Globally, but start locally”.
You should try it out.
The little you do today could be what makes the world better tomorrow.
Yet, after all of this, results might be discouraging. You could even end up losing interest when you get faced with frustrations at every corner.
What do you do?
In situations like this, you need:
- counsel from mentors,
- advice from experts in your field, and
- support from family and friends to keep your hope for change alive.
Change stops when you become narrow-minded, losing sight of where you are and where you want to be.
Never stop to desire a change because change starts with you.
