Do you know that FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is in the process of developing new flood plain maps for El Paso County? Probably not! FEMA and both the City and County have published notices in the press and media to advise property owners of the process, as required by law. Unfortunately, that means most residents are not aware of the ongoing process or its potential impact on property values or flood insurance requirements, let alone that there is a formal protest process if your property is affected. FEMA has designated a formal “comment period” that begins May 23rd, 2021 and ends August 21st, 2021. During the 90-day period, comments must be submitted to the City of El Paso. The link to the flood plain maps and information for submitting comments can be found on the City’s website by visiting the Planning and Inspections home page.
