DO YOU KNOW ?
Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History and Literature Week in 1926, in Chicago, to recognize Black achievements. This recognition evolved into Black History Month, when in 1976 President Gerald R. Ford issued a message recognizing Black History Month. In 1986 Congress passed a Public Law designating February as “National Black History Month.”
The official theme for Black History Month 2025 is “African Americans and Labor.” The topic looks at the significant ways our labor (free, paid, skilled, unskilled, vocational and voluntary) played essential roles in the development the colonies, institutions, and industries of this country. Some folks want to minimize the role of African Americans, negating the importance of “black jobs.”
These accomplishments with emphasis on food and food related achievements will appear on my Instagram, @charlaldraper. Stop by, you may be surprised by the labor-related accomplishments and impact African Americans have made.
