Do You Have To Work With A Fancy Architecture Firm To Have A Cool Office?

We all hear about the amazing offices of companies like Google, Facebook and LinkedIn. But not every company has millions of dollars to spend on fancy design and architecture firms. So does that mean these organizations are doomed to having terrible office spaces? Actually, some believe that there really is no need to hire an architecture firm because essentially they would trying to design an office space that they don’t work in, for a culture they likely don’t understand.

So what do you do if you want to have a cool office but don’t have millions of dollars to spend? This conversation came up at the recent Future of Work Forum in Chicago. One of the attendees mentioned that he did a DIY office redesign. The employees went to IKEA on the weekend and bought furniture, paint, and supplies. Then they were able to create the space they wanted to work in. They redesigned, added color, created community desks, and brought life to their office on a budget.

If you want a modern office design, lack of budget is not a fair excuse. If your organization is large, you just aren’t prioritizing your office design. Allocate it in the budget and make it happen. Smaller organizations can recruit employees to create their own space. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. It should represent what the employees care about and value. Allow them to have a voice in the environment they wish to work in!

Are they flying because of the beer, Mark Haynes? Because either a strong correlation needs to be made between good beer and good business or there's some seriously hallucinogenic beer spiking going on.

With so much emphasis on the funds deployed to make a business more digital, the essentials of being more hospitable are lost in the equation. Receptionists are replaced by tablets for guest registration and grand structures become the norm instead of intimate environments. Be it a large company or small, feeling at ease is hugely dependent on your surroundings. Get this right and the employees will flourish.
