What used to work just a few months ago, no longer applies during a crisis. The word 'leader' has a new meaning, and it's important for you to adjust your leadership style if you plan on keeping morale up.
How you show up will dictate how your team will also show up for you. I know a lot of people are scrambling trying to figure out how to be a good leader and how to ensure their team is still being productive.
I'm going to share 3 tips that will help you and your team adjust to our new reality - working remotely. At the time of this article, most people are figuring out how to still be productive and be a positive role model for their team(s). This applies to those who are wanting to create a healthy culture for their business or dept. If you're ready to up-level your leadership or ready to bet on yourself and start your own business, then this was written just for you.
Leadership is a skill and if you look back at the great leaders, you will notice a common theme . . .
. . . They all practice success habits, are great listeners and lead by example.
Today, I'm going to share 3 tips on how you can become one of the great leaders for you and your team.
- Allow people to feel that they are part of something that is bigger than themselves. Most people are transactional - ie - I do this and in return, you give me that. This could be a promotion, raise, company recognition or your paycheck. Instead, let them be part of the planning process. Listen to their ideas and suggestions. This will empower them to feel invested in the success of the project, and wanting to always give 100%.
- Grow in your leadership - be a culture of progress. Observe what other leaders you admire are doing and learn from them. There's no need to reinvent the wheel when they got the blueprint ready for you. Find out what others around you need from you and then serve. This is where leadership and management differ, or you can say where leadership and micromanagement start to separate. Trust that the team members you have are the best in what they do.
- Reduce complexity. Especially for those who have a team or an assistant and then wonder why the work is not getting done. Maybe YOU didn’t do a good job with the educational part of teaching what is needed or required from them. If and when you make things to complex, you never create a change of progress. You stay stuck!
When this happens, people start to flake out, stop learning, stop showing up at their best levels.
What you want to do as a leader is to create a path for success. It’s ok if you don’t have it all dialed in and don’t have all the answers, that will come in time. What you want to do is just START.
To wrap it all up - it all comes down to respecting others and treating them with respect. Show up for them, so they will want to show up for you.
Find out what might be holding them back, what fears they may have and help or mentor them so you can be part of their own progress of change.
