How much can you grow personally and professionally? How much happiness, wealth, and success can you really achieve and enjoy? It depends on whether or not you can?spot and shoot?your Upper Limit problem.
Upper Limit Problem is a phrase coined by Gay Hendricks, author of?The Big Leap. Hendricks says.
“Each of us has an?inner thermostat setting?that determines how much love, success (including happiness, wealth, income), and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy.?When we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will often do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back into the old, familiar zone where we feel secure.?Unfortunately, our thermostat setting usually gets programmed in early childhood,?before we can think for ourselves. Once programmed, our Upper Limit thermostat setting holds us back from enjoying all the love, financial abundance, and creativity that’s rightfully ours.“
How The Problem Starts, How To Spot It, and How To Shoot It Down
Last Monday was one of the most focused and productive days I can remember. I finally completed tons of pending tasks. Some tasks have been pending for 3 years! That day, I started working at 6:30 am and continued working till midnight with relentless focus, energy, and enthusiasm. By the end of it all –?I felt truly accomplished. I have knocked off dozens of things from my never-ending To Do List. When I stopped, I said “That was awesome. I should do this again tomorrow – and knock off another dozen things.?This feels great.” Suddenly, out of nowhere, another thought emerged. “Tomorrow, I should just sleep. I worked too much today.” That was me automatically trying to sabotage my own perception of progress. I felt I had gotten better and instead of progressing further, the programmed response to success was trying to bring myself back to the familiar and comfortable territory of mediocrity.?It’s our system’s programming reminding us ‘You are having too much of a good thing'

This can happen in any area of life. It results in us settling for lower targets and states of being.?Are you able to spot these moments where you feel you had too much love, success, and progress which leads you to do something that slows down your progress or derails your own plans??Glad I spotted the Upper Limit breach before it affected me – and I took corrective actions.
As Hendricks says “I have a limited tolerance for feeling good.?When I hit my Upper Limit, I manufacture thoughts that make me feel bad.?The problem is bigger than just my internal feelings, though: I seem to have limited tolerance for my life going well in general. When I hit my Upper Limit, I do something that stops my positive forward trajectory. I get into a conflict with my ex-wife, get into a money bind, or?do something else that brings me back down within the bounds of my limited tolerance.“
This is why it is important to surround yourself with mentors who lift you up, and support you with timely doses of wisdom that help you to breach your upper limits repeatedly and?progress?consistently.?Small daily ordinary improvements over a long period of time, result in large extraordinary results.
