I hoped to run my first marathon this year, but after a 30K trail race, my knee started acting up, keeping me out of the running game for weeks.
Any runner knows this as unwelcome news.
Running has been part of my life for 20+ years, so NOT running was an extreme and immediate change to my daily routine.
Life was disrupted.
This is how job loss can feel. One moment, you’re gunning for the corner office, and the next, you’ve been handed a box to clear your workspace.
You don’t “deserve” this, but that doesn’t stop your mind from trying to figure out what you could have done differently.
Like an injured runner, you need rest, recovery and a comeback strategy.
A job search recovery plan might include:
1) Confidence-boosting exercises (don’t pretend you’re fine when you’ve clearly been ‘troubled’ by this layoff)
2) An assessment of how you position yourself in the job market. Don’t worry if this sounds like work, your career professional has done this thousands of times. Trust their process.
3) Exercises, research and actions to take now (hello networking) to prepare yourself and position yourself in the market.

If you’re like most of us, you’re feeling pressure to get back to work quickly.
Not so fast, my friend.
I was fortunate to have a team of experts helping me navigate what was wrong with my knee. They helped set me on a (very slow) path to recovery.
When it comes to your career, you need the same - rest and recovery, before trying to jump into the market again.
What do you need to “strengthen” before putting yourself out there? How do you prevent risk or re-injury from job search rejection?
As for me, I’m back running injury-free with friends. I’m grateful to have invested in professionals who helped me recover. Now, I’m listening to my footsteps hit the pavement while I train for my next race.
Before you try a do-it-yourself job search, take a moment to figure out what you need to make the most of your time so you can effectively and efficiently bring your job search to a close with a job offer that fulfils, or even exceeds your expectations.

2 个月"Don’t spend time investing in the wrong opportunity only to be exactly where you are now, only six months later" - what an impactful message Maureen McCann. This is exactly what job seekers would not want to do. A professional like yourself can provide the guidance and help to develop the plan to ensure this doesn't happen. Thinking of you as you recover, Maureen. This post brought me back to Feb 2023 when I broke my femur!

2 个月Learning how to manage the injuries was a big part of my endurance sports recreational career. There was always something but like you Maureen I found a team of professionals that helped me get back on track. It took time and money but a plan, treatment (coaching), and lots of exercises (action items) allowed me to do what I wanted again. Happy to hear you are traiining again!
